What makes engine fire up quickly?

I have a 82 F100 w/ 302 2bbl carb. I also had a '79 that was extremely similar as far as major components go. The 79 would fire up practically instantly after turning the key while my 82 takes about 2.5 seconds of cranking to fire up. Sometimes I let go and try again for about the same duration before it runs. Why? The 2.5 seconds seems like an eternity. Also, in cold weather, do these trucks always have to die at least once? Both trucks insist on being started twice when its < say 40ish deg F or so.

Sounds like your choke adjustment is off. And it's not that easy to get it just right. It takes alot of experimentation with the round black choke housing adjustment.
