Hello all,
Just hoping to get a little info. I have a 1979 ford f100 2wd and I was hoping to put a manual transmission in it. It now has a three speed in it and I have changed the shifter to the floor. I wanted to buy either a four speed or newer five speed to put in it. Does anyone know what models of ford trucks that I could buy the transmission out of and bolt it to my 302.
Hi brebt, you've got some options for a transmission in that truck. Maybe a few guys that really know the four speed transmissions can chime in here but as for putting a five speed in it, you can use a T5 (think 5.0 Mustang) if you aren't going to be hard on the truck. It's a decent transmission but if you plan on adding any kind of power, it's days will be short lived. You'll absolutely love the gear ratios behind your 302 though.
Lots and lots of later model 5.0 trucks had 5-speed manual transmissions that would give you pretty much everything you needed to bolt it in. I would think sourcing out a 1992 - 1996 F150 would yield the best parts. You can source the 5.0 Mustangs for the hard parts as well but will still need some of the F150 pieces to complete your puzzle.
If you've got the budget spend it on a Tremec TKO, the last transmission you'll ever buy for your truck! They are pricey but they take one heck of a pounding!
Ive heard issues of using the 4 cylinder 5spd behind the V8 due to the input shaft pushing on the crank or something like that, so watch out for it. Otherwise I believe those transmissions are the same.
