charcoal box?

I'm thinking of replacing the breather on my 71 F100 (302 cid / C4 trans). There are two hoses going to the PCV filter inside the breather... one goes to the valve cover and the other goes to a box on the frame rail.

The one going to the valve cover is the PCV 'intake' and should be replaced with a valve cover breather but I don't what that box is or what I should do with the hose going to it.

It has another small line going to it that come from toward the back of the truck... about the size of a fuel or transmission line.

I think I've heard similar looking boxes called charcoal boxes but I'm not sure what it's for or more importantly what to do with the hose that goes to the breather.

Anyone know?

Thanks,
Tom

Thats is your Evaporative Canister. I captures all of the fuell vapors from your Gas tank and your carb fuel bowl and stores them for burning later. You should leave it on and make sure all of the lines are ok.

I read other posts about a fuel line going from the fuel bowl to the canister but this one seems a little different. The hose I'm questioning is about a 1/2 inch hose. Not a fuel line. The one going to the tank is like a fuel line. Also, it doesn't go to the carb it goes to the breather. So if the breather is replaced there will be nowhere to connect it.

Do you have a vac hose diagram on the radiator core support or the hood? It will tell you what line is what. My guess is the 1/2" line is a fresh air inlet for the canister especially if its filtered but my knowledge pre-79 is limited.
Hope this helps

No vac hose diagram... but I'm thinking the same thing you are - must be the fresh air inlet.

Rigging up a valve cover breather or something similar down at the canister might pick up water so I'm thinking about abandoning the whole idea and just trying to restore the factory breather.
