Adding Offroad Lighting

Hey one more question - I removed the stock driving lights from the lower grill of my new 2003 F350 and installed a Westin Bullbar, Skid Plate and a pair of KC Daylighters (200,000 CP). I was going to use the existing feed wires from the factory lamps as a trigger to the KC Daylighters relay so whenever I wanted my offroad lights on, I would simply pull on the headlamp switch and instead of the driving lights (stock) I would have my offroad lights which are now located on the bullbar.

Well I got to thinking that maybe the stock driving lights were fed off a relay anyway, as they must pull some power too. So the question - Has anyone simply re-used the existing wiring harness from the stock lamps to power an offroad light similiar to the KC Daylighter and did the stock wiring do the job? I can simply use the power feed as a trigger and install a seperate relay and power wires for the new system, but using the stock wiring harness seems so much more elegant. Your thoughts??

Thanks all.....

Mike

I've not done it...

But I would definitely think that the KC lights would be too much for the existing wiring harness. Using the existing wiring harness to power the relay is probably your best bet...

I'm sure some of the other guys will have some suggestions..

Yea well thats the real question - would hate to fry the wiring harness on a truck with 400 miles on it

I think the safe bet is the original one - use the wire as a trigger and run seperate wire back to the lights - no chance of smoking my harness that way and it leaves the stock connectors in place should I ever want to put the old lights back in.....

Thanks

Just to be on the safe side order a harness with relay setup from painlesswiring.com or www.raingler.com under there lightforce offroad light section. I have the harness and in my opinion it is top quality.

Well I went with plan B - thanks for all the input. Basically I installed a relay on the fender well next to the battery, grounded it, ran a seperate ground and power direct from the battery, and used the *hot* wire used in the stock wiring harness to trigger the relay.

Now when you turn the headlights on, and pull for the driving lights, the feed triggers the relay which provides direct power from the battery and WHOLA! light.......

Nice and elegant with no holes drilled, no pass through wires, and it runs off the stock headlight switch so it's integrated. Came out good -

Thanks all

Mike
