im helping a friend with his 78 f250 and it needs some body panels. would you guys reccommend LMC's parts or Branco Graveyard? is there any other vendors we should look into?
I've used all of the mentioned parts suppliers. I would rate Dennis Carpenter and NPD at the top. Bronco Graveyard depends on the part. Some of their stuff is as good as it gets. Some of it is on par with LMC. I've never been impressed with LMC's quality, prices or customer service.
Depends what I am buying but for complete body panels, I'd go with OEM or original tooling as much as possible. OEM or OEM quality stuff typically has more defined and accurate bends/contours like the factory.
Patch panels are another matter. Some are really good, some are just okay. For me, one stipulation is that the metal gauge has to be the same.
LMC, JBG, NPD, DC, BOTP, ... they all have their strengths and weaknesses.
I've bought stuff from Bronco graveyard, paid a little more thinking "you get what you pay for".............and the fricken stuff comes in an lmc bag or has an lmc sticker!! I lost alot of respect for bronco graveyard after that. In my opinion, Dennis Carpenter is by far the best.
Definitely get all the catalogs. In fact, they make great resource material with all their drawings and the DC catalog actually uses the original Ford part numbers - handy for those wrecking yard trips. My hunt right now is for a fan shroud (and I'm totally confused!). I've pretty much set up a reference library and cycle out the old catalog when new ones arrive.
When doing a major purchase, I've set up spreadsheets to determine whose total price comes out the least with the quality I want. I'll pay more for some parts and maybe save alot on a few. For my Mustangs, NPD typically came out way ahead due to their volume. In shopping for a Hotchkis Suspension System for my Pontiac btwn Jeg's, OPG, YearOne, and Summit, Summit came in lowest (with fastest shipping). YearOne and OPG wanted an arm, a leg, AND my first born. Do some wise shopping and then you can put your savings towards other parts!
Repro pans and rockers are nearly consumables to me and not critical for appearance. Structurally however they should at least be the same gauge thickness.
