So I went to replace my ball joints, rotors, and pads and I found out that I have a bad bearing. So I started looking into how much that was gonna cost and everyone was telling me $250-$300 cause I would have to buy the whole wheel bearing assembly. Then I found out that I didn't have to do that and that I could actally replace that bearing. I got pretty excited $30 is way better than a few hundred. Then I came to realize that the bearing wore down the axle. So Ford said that they only sell it in one piece and its $600. My wife already hates the ex and I'm banging my head against the wall trying to figure out how to fix this thing without selling body parts. I'm gonna check into junk yards but, my question is will an axle off of a F250 work if I can't find an ex? Or is there something else that I might be missing? I need help!!! I love this truck and I'm trying to prove to the wife that its worth keeping.
I don't know where you are located but, if you have a heavy duty truck shop (ie: Peterbilt, Kenworth) close by see if they know someone with a mobile axle repair bussiness, this happens on heavy trucks and trailers all the time and they can repair them. Don't know if they can fix an axle this size but its worth a try.
I owned my own trucking company for about 20 years and yes we had a couple of axles fixed!
If the axle isn't too bad you can clean it up wirh emery cloth and tap in a new bearing unit ($10+-). I wouldn't replace the whole wheel hub but you can grease it while you are at it. https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/8...ml#post7593063
Thanks for your help fellas. Thanks EXv10 for that link, it helped allot. Guzzle's articles were exactly what I needed (part#'s and all). I found out that Ford does sell just the axle stub. It's pretty bad so I do need to replace it and now I know how to hopefully prevent this from happening again. Its interesting how Ford keeps telling me they don't have something and then I find it or I can't do something and I get it figured out (Thanks to this forum!!!).
