I hope some one can give me some answers. I bought yet another Ford truck. It is an 89 F-150 extra cab 4x4 and the question is about the charging system. Now I have checked the alternator and it is puting out 14.69 at idle and it I turn on the lights and the heater blower motor and then put it in gear (yes it is an automatic) the voltage drops and the headlights dim some. Now I have a good battery and new positive and negative cables and can't seem to find any grounds missing. Now I even put in a new alt. to have no change so I put the old one back in. Now my mother-inlaws 88 F-150 2wd does the same thing. Can anyone shed some light on this problem or is just the nature of the beast? See my 67 nor my 76 do that. Thanks Steve
For real dim, go back to a 50's generator. At idle the battery kept things going. Seriously, you might test the alternator to see if it puts out the rated amps.
Well that is what I thought. I have tested the alt and it puts out the amp between 750-800 rpm. Thanks everyone I will not worry about it then. I hate to see what it does when I kick on the fog light. Well that all. Thanks again Steve
You could always convert the headlights & Fog light to run off relay's this would make it easier on the headlight switch and provide better illumination.
