I have a 4.6 L that I special ordered with a 3.55 ratio axle. My milage is around 15 mpg regardless of highway or city. Is my axle causing my milage to be low? If so, what should I expect with the standard axle?
Thanks
That seems a bit low.Is the truck a 4X4?3.55s shouldnt be that bad on mileage as 3.73s.What is it supposed to get on the hwy?For comparison I have a 98 Expedition 2wd with 4.6 and a 3.31 rear,it rated at 15/19 but I`m getting 15city and 20-21 hwy(70mph).I think my hwy mileage may be due to the 3inch single exhaust and K&N air filter I installed.
Is it rated for that with the 3.55s ?If not you still should get at least 17-18 on the hwy.A good mod in addition to the ones I`ve done to my Expedition is to get a bed cover.Tailgates cause alot of drag on trucks expecially at hwy speeds.Ive owned many trucks in the past and hwy mpg has always increased 1-2mpg after adding a cover or a tailgate net.If this a brand new truck, your mileage may increase after the motor breaks in.(1000 miles or so)
i have 97 4.6 auto 2wd with 3.55 rear end . Consistently get 17+ mpg. no truck mods. my opinion, in no way do i buy into the stories about effect of tail gates that are on/off. Anybody out there making mpg comparisons, fill the tank until you see fuel lapping at the top of the fuel nozzle. Only way to get a consistent mpg calculation.
Thats how I come up with my mpg numbers.Fill the tank, reset tripometer, drive to almost empty, refill and do the math.Ive owned a 89 mazda b2200 4cyl,a 82 s10 w/350v8.I had the mazda for 8 yrs and sold it with 166k miles on it.When I first got it and took it on a long trip (HWY)I calculated the mpg.Later I added a bed cover not knowing any claims of better mpg.The truck consistantly got 1-2 mpg better on the hwy.Even the top speed increased by 4-5 mph.Did the same with the s10 similiar results. Now I have a 96f150 and will be building a cover.not just for more mpg though, security also. When the air passes over a truck cab it goes down into the bed and the tailgates do create a drag.
