I live in Las Vegas, NV. I was in Reno this weekend and lost all of the oil in the motor of my 1997 F350. It is leaking oil somewhere in the back of the motor, perhaps, at the turbocharger to motor gasket. The truck is sitting at the tow yard in a shady part of town and I am trying to either 1) get it to vegas or 2) find someone other than the dealer to diagnose and fix it. If I rent a truck and trailer it will cost as much as paying the dealer to fix it. I am looking for options.
Bottome line:
Do you know of a reputable shop in Reno, NV that can fix my truck?
High pressure oil rail plug on the back of the head(s) is the most likely place to look. Be sure to look into the engine valley, you need to remove the decorative cover over the fuel filter to see everything. Hopefully it's just an o-ring or two.
The picture below shows the oil rail plug. It's about 2" in diameter at the top of the picture. (lousy pict, sorry)
The guy is holding is the fuel rail plug.
what cuda said, I walked out of a store and found a big puddle of oil under my engine, it was a the o-ring on the plug that failed, I was able to sneak in and replace the o-ring on the right rear cylinder head with a swivle head half inch rachet. The half inch rachet will fit right into the plug.
You can view the oil leak by crawling under the truck and look up along the top of the bell housing till you see the back of the cylinder head.....OR.......see from the top with a mirror and flashlight.
I've replace my right rear and left front oil rail plug o-rings.
