I am looking at a 1995 XCab 4X4 to buy. It is 351 w/98,000 + miles on it. Are there any visual inspections I can make or unusual noises to make sure the truck is good to buy? Are there any unusual maintenance difficulties to worry about in the front axle? It is at one of the major FORD dealers here in San Antonio.
THANKS for all the help and info I find from everyone here on this site.
you do,
look for (besides the usual driveability/mech/electr. problems):
oil pan rust...clean and prime/paint it before it develops leaks.
Rad. arm bushings=deterioration
radiator leak esp. during the engine cool down period; our 96 leaked at 60k miles at the plastic end caps despite coolant changes every year.
rust inside the rear fender lips
e4od; a few problems; look here for common problems and see if owner replaced tranny fluids at maint intervals: http://www.atcdg.com/TechMain.htm
I have a really good suggestion. The best way to tell if a Truck has ever had body work done to it is to, get a magnet and go around the truck. If the magnet sticks then that means theres metal there and NO body work. If the magnet doesn't stick then that means that you have discovered BONDO!! Nooooooooo!!
