hey guys not new to the forums but new to this idi forum . Got a 88 f-250 7.3IDI. I have two problems I need some help with.
The first is when the glow plugs are heating the wait to start light stays on for the normal 8-10 seconds. However it wont start and acts like the glow plugs never got heated. The only way to start is to give it a shot of ether and it fires right up. Could this be my glow plug controller or solenoid?
The second is the hood only shuts to the first safety lock position. It will not shut all the way down to the second lock and I don't know why. Any help on these issues would be appreciated.
Do you hear a clicking noise when you turn on the key? If so its probably the GPs themselves,,,replace ONLY with motorcraft berous .......Dont know about the hood Can you post a pic? that may help...
yep for the hood, it could be the little rubber ***** are set too high and it cant close down far enough or the latch itself is broken and cant close or is in need of a shot of wd40.
Near the dip stick there is a connector where the engine harness plugs into the chassis harness.
On the 88 there should be two large yellow or tan wires in one end of the connector.
Inspect that connector closely looking for signs of being overheated.
Those large wires carry battery power to the glow plug relay.
Resistance in the connections make the plug melt.
Once the plug melts, not enough power is making it to the glow plugs for them to heat like they should.
The only repair that works, splice the two large wires around the connector.
If you go to do that, be careful, they have battery power at all times.
