Is there any downside to installing a lower temp t'stat. My ECT's can climb to 218 or so pulling an 8k trailer up some grades. As far as I can tell the t'stat opens at about 210 or so.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanx
I may be wrong but I believe the t-stat starts to open @195. I sure others will chime in!!
YA, I'm pretty sure mine opens at @195 to. The only thing about with a lower t-stat that diesels need the higher temps to help burn the fuel. Now it might be fine if you are towing but with out your truck would never make the right temp.
it may be sticking get a new one mine was worn in the middle from the spring it may stick closed and cause an overheat condition get original temp thermistat

Depends on the weight and grade. Leaving Bishop for Mammoth last week, 102 degrees ambient and pulling about 13 k, I hit 227 for a couple seconds and 240 eot. twelve mile 8% grade. Cooled back to normal as soon as I downshifted. 218 on a grade pulling a load will hurt nothing. Your t-stat appears fine to me.
Thanx 69cj. Those temps you quoted were about the same for me so now I don't feel so bad. BTW, as a result of Cheezit's research with regard to the side effects of disconnecting the EGR valve after an EGR delete, I left the EGR vale in place and connected. The fan came on just like it should have. Noisy SOB but at least it functions normally. That's why this site is so invaluable. Real world experience from real world guys. Thanx to all who responded. Best to all
