what if any can i expect adding msd components new distributor coil, msd 6a box harness and rpm corrector any one do this 1992 351w superchip and kandn fipk total 520$$more horsies better fuel mileage ?15 now also have accel race wires on it thanks , all feedback welcomed TR
I did the MSD 6A. I got the plug in harness just in case I didnt like it. It runs smootrher and gets a little more than 1 mpg better. It's worth it to me. I dont know about the rest of the stuff. I've read a lot of bad coments about MSD. But I can only say what my experince is.
1. Superchip- this is really nothing more than fine tuning your drivetrain...15 hp and better drivability in terms of performance aspects
2. OEM ignition systems are excellent- there is no gain to MSD, Accel, etc with regards to benefits with a resonably stock engine. Where people will see gains is when an older oem system is replaced with a new system- whether it oem or accel.
3. FIPK-
If you do an online search for “air filter test” there is a lot of very good information. IMHO, the CAI units are NOT WORTH THE $$! Unless you are talking about a system that was specifically designed for a specific application there are very little hp/tq gains actually achieved in a street use vehicle and there are very few docs that these mfg’s can produce that actually show an increase in hp/tq in the power-band range of a relatively stock street vehicle.
I would avoid oil impregnated filters. While they have their purpose in off-road applications, Ford/GM/Dodge all have “watch-out” bulletins where the oil has contaminated intake sensors. - they even have a training video for the tech's on this (flatratetech.com) .
If you look at the flow data, WIX filters flow 98+% of K&N and have a much smoother flow post filter plus excellent filtering, for a fraction of the price! The OE’s have an excellent air intake system. What many view as an issue (is the plastic intake tube with it’s noise canceling design) actually increases air pressure. It is the same hydraulic concept used by fire fighters creating water supply where psi is low. By having the air cross the path at a 90 degree angle, the pressure is increased proportionally. Fire fighters use what is called a “4-way valve” or “Blake Valve” at the hydrant where the water is cycled through the fire engine (pump) and sent back into the valve crossing the water flow at a 90 degree angle. In this case it also acts as a sound canceling device! At low speeds, this can reduce the flow a tad (which is what most “feel”), but in terms of peak hp/tq, a good high flow filter is all that is needed. You can use a WIX OEM HP replacement filter in the OEM plastic manifold box and either remove the plastic tube and replace it with a piece of pipe/hose, etc or remove the tube completely and replace the tube by building an air ram type intake into the air box manifold (where the pipe use to attach)- make sure ti terminates above the fan shroud to avoid water intake or fan induced pulsations.
That's funny. My MSD BOX has more miles on it then my stock ignition. (I had it on my old Bronco) So I'm replacing a newer stock ignition with a more used MSD. If you lesten to it run stock and then plug the MSD, it will make a believer of you. I've checked the millage several times. (I drive a 400 mile trip every two weeks) I am a skeptic. I wont make any claims of power, but if it gets better millage, doesnt that mean it's getting more power from the same amount of fuel.

Don't waste any money on chips, CAI, KN, throttle body spacers or fancy BS spark plugs.
The stock distributor is just fine. Upgrading it won't gain much if anything at all.
I recommend MSD coil, cap/rotor, Ford Racing spark plug wires, and Motorcraft plugs.
If your truck has the air tube on top of the radiator, swap it out for one from an I6/460 truck that gets air from the grille. Its a cheap mod.
Stick with Motorcraft, Wix, or Purolator replacement air filters.

MSD & oem components are almost identical in their performance specs (volt, miliamp, etc.)- it's just a matter of which one is in better condition.
