so although this is my 4th superduty, the last 2 i have bought new. so i havnt been in the used market for a while.. so after getting 12mpg in my 08 6.4.... i decided to go back to a 7.3 and a manual transmission. i found a 2000 f-250 xlt supercab long bed 4x4 diesel 6 speed. 217k miles. kbb books this truck at $12,500. the guy was asking $11000. after driving the truck i noticed some tranny noise and diesel in the valley on top of the motor... so after stating my concerns i talked him down to $7800. just took the truck to shop and here are the results. diesel leak was caused by a hpop. tranny turned out to be fine. but the truck needed hubs, and ball joints. all of that plus new fluids and filters means $3200. so im in $11000. i get the truck back wed and hopefully she will ride like new!
Buying used is like playing poker, sometimes lady luck is with you and sometimes she's not. Looks like she was not only with you but she is sittin' in the passenger seat right now. You did good.
wow im surprized you could go back to a 2000 after owning a 2008.. no way i could..
couldnt you have done some mods on teh 6.4 to regain some MPG, that would have made more sence to me then trying to get more MPG out of that old 7.3...
still if the truck makes you happy then its a good deal..
You sold an almost brand new engine, with a warranty still on it... and went back to the Model A of Super Duty trucks... over a lousy 4 miles per gallon of diesel.
I've got a great beach-front house I'd like to sell you, it's just outside Phoenix, right on the ocean...
Well, I'm not one for going backwards, and what I mean by that is in this case you went from an 08 to an 01. The bottom line is this, if you are happy then that is all that matters. The only person you need to please is yourself. So if you are happy then you did good.
I would go backwards to a 97-95 if it was and pretty good truck. I mean I for one would love to have a 7.3 truck, but I only have 2002 so Im pretty far behind to begin with.
Price-wise, that's not a bad deal, and about fair to both parties concerned. Your bottom line will end up about "par".
If you want "bling and flash, and goin' fast", of course the 7.3 isn't the one, but if reliability is near the top of your list, ....well, you obviously know the rest. There's a reason those "old" trucks are increasing in value right now.
Was in a VERY fully-loaded 2011 F-450 CC yesterday. It's soon on it's way to the magazines for testing and evaluation, so you KNOW it's premium. $68,000 as it sits. Yup, it's extremely nice, NAV and all, and would be real nice to own, but at the end of the day I got back in my "antique", and quite proudly drove away.
I love mine. It does the job I need it to do, still looks good, and costs me next to nothing.
Oh, and for those that are concerned about having a warranty, why is that important?

yea right i would never sell my 04! not even for a new super duty. i get way too many "nice truck man" and "man that truck looks and sounds great" to every sell her.
You're gonna like it! I've got one, but it's an automatic. It's close to 294K and it's still running strong. It's starting to show it's age in the way of onery bugs, but the truck itself is still PLENTY sound! I'd go from an '08 to my '99 in a heartbeat.
My dad has an '08 and I'll admit, it's a pretty dang sweet truck! It rides nice, looks clean, has a TON of options I wouldn't mind having, and pulls really well. BUT... the MPG's are pathetic (he's yet to get past 14MPG's), it smells pretty bad, and you can't hear the truck! So far (at 65k), it's been alright except for one time it just quit cold... after cleaning some sensors and resetting the PCM, the truck fired right up and has been fine ever since.
A 6.0L is outta the question for me... my cousin has one and it's been through one HPOP, EGR a few times, and three sets of injectors. On top of that, it's only got 110k on it!
I would love to test drive a 6.7L, but I think it'd be pointless... I'd love it an all, but I'd get back into my truck (just like Pop) and be glad I'm still driving it.
Your '00 is a bit of a step down when it comes to bells and whistles, but you'll probably be running alot longer than the rest of them will. There's one guy on here that has 315-325K on his 7.3L... I can't wait until my truck gets there so I can rub it in!
I think you did alright... I'm just a little curious as to what an HPOP has to do with diesel in the valley pan. If that's the case, then you would have to have a leaking fuel line or fuel bowl. An HPOP is oil-related... I could be wrong, but it just don't sound right to me.
