time to vent!
#1 snapping a water pump bolt off in the block is no fun. Have. Yet to get it out.
#2 if u make ur own gasket for the oil pump to pickup tube, make sure u have the hole for the oil to flow thro. Othere wise u have no oil.
#3 a starter from an automatic and manual trans vheicle have the same mounting holes. Yet they do not sit inside the bell housing the same. The auto WILL rub on the flywheel!!!
#4 water pumps do make a big deal in your mounting brakets!! For simplicity stick to what it came with. A mustang and truck aren't exactly the same.
Well do post up what silly things u have learned. Hopefully somebody will get a laugh out of this. I know I did/am. As I try to fix my mistakes.
So I have to pull it all back apart and do it again, duh me. That's what happens when you're working on 3 cars at the same time. At least you remembered to put the brackets on the water pump, I've put the water pump on before and forget to attach all the brackets, I just stared at it like what was I thinking.
There is always a positive way to look at things. Heck if u can smile and laugh at ur own little mistakes then ur doing good. I've seen some people get upset over simple things. O well I'll let them keep their high blood presure!!
Not too long ago I was at the junkyard and for some reason I decided that since I found a deluxe padded steering wheel for my truck, I thought that warranted an attempt at straightening the current wheel so it'd be centered properly (it hasn't been centered for a loooong time). So I disconnect the column from the steering box, and spend the next 15 minutes trying to figure out why in the Sam Hill it won't go back on. Yard owner was no help (him selling a vehicle took higher priority...), so I ended up figuring it out by myself.
I finally had a revelation: perhaps there is a reason that the steering shaft coming out of the box has a flat area on it that matches the shape of the inside of the clamp on the column shaft!
Upon making such an astute observation, I quickly rectified my connection problem and was on my merry way.
Then there was the time that I got tired of my rearview mirror re-aiming itself, so I decided that I would adjust its aim at the ball-joint nearest to the base as opposed to the joint by the mirror head. I'll just say this....30 year old adhesive has to come loose some time! I'm using this as my excuse to get a mirror out of a 2000s Firebird so I can get one with built-in reading lights.

And I don't know if this counts, but a month or two ago, as I was leaving the bank parking lot that's on a stretch of highway near my house, my empty 2 gallon gas can decided it wanted to escape. I got maybe a 1/4 of a mile down the road....looked over my shoulder into the bed to see if it was still in the back. Nope...must be where I can't see it. Kept driving. Look in my rearview mirror and see a little red can in the middle of the road....hey that looks an awful lot like my can, neat! WAIT IT IS MINE!!
I went back to get it, and as I parked in the bank parking lot so I could go get it, some guys in a little Ranger pull up and have their eye on it. I kindly tell them it fell out of my truck, and after a short exchange of "oh okay cool" and "hahahaha", all was well.
I'm sure I'll remember more. lol
long story short i ended up in 5 o'clock traffic playing frogger to get my friends tires and rims out of the busyst intersection in town.. i can laugh now..but i was pissed then..
