Any advice on starter brands (from NAPA, AutoZone, Pep Boys)?
I just bought a 1993 Bronco in January & now it appears my starter is dead. Banging on it didn't help (yet). TBH, I haven't spent a lot of time troubleshooting the issue since it hasn't gone above 10 degrees all week (here in MA). The Delco battery appears charged. I've only driven the truck for about 400 miles. At least it was kind enough to wait until I put on new Michelin(s) & filled the tank before it died.
Whenever it comes to items under the hood, I always stick to Motorcraft. Ive never had to get a replacement starter, so as to particulars I cant be too much help. As for living in MA, it was -10 when I went to get coffee this morning. I wish Broncos had heated seats . Oh well.
I like Napa stuff but you can't beat Autozones lifetime warranty. For a starter I'd probably use Autozones b/c of the lifetime warranty. Reason being, I plan on putting headers on in the future and starters sometimes fail with the added heat of headers. If I weren't planning on getting headers I'd go with Napa.
i prefer the napa starters myself!! I think they are the most reliable... but then again you can't beat the lifetime warranty of autozone... i think either one is going to be ok.... i think the autozone model might be a little cheaper also.... have you checked the solenoid? you can jump it to see if that is your problem. pretty easy to test actually.
Thanks to all the quick responses. I suppose a solenoid check would be a good idea. It's been close to 20 years since the last time I tried this. If memory serves, key needs to be in the on position & you cross the poles on the solenoid with a screwdriver (holding the plastic handle so as not to get zapped). If the starter turns, it's the solenoid. If not, it's the starter. One thing I do know, there's a lot of old oil under there. The truck had the rear main seal, oil pan gasket, and manifold replaced right before I bought it (from my brother-in-law). Connectivity could be an issue.
Try Power master http://www.powermastermotorsports.com/
they have a wide range of aternators and starters to choose from. I just recently installed one of their 200A alternators into my rig. I also ordered a battery isolator them to match.
I personally don't care for most of the chain part stores like grand auto, kragen, pepboys or any others. Either bad raps, from my own experience or others that I know, with there parts going out soon after they were installed. I recently had a water pump like this, ordered from one of them parts stores, that the machine shop had purchased when my engine was rebuilt. I had to replace it again since then. The machine shop went out of business during that time so I couldn't get warrenty.
That is mostly why I try to purchase my parts from specialty shops, or directly from the particular manufacturer if possible.
But have fun with your new toy. I was doing just that yesterday up in the taheo national forest. Almost got my self stuck twice real good, but I was able to get my self out without stepping foot on ground(accually snow)
It doesn't matter where the key is if you're jumping the big terminals and you don't really want the engine to run. It can be the ignition switch if the starter DOES spin, so if it does, jump from the battery terminal of the relay to the little terminal and see what happens. If the starter spins again, it's in the ignition switch circuit.
The Zone LLT warranty can be easily beaten by an Advance, CarQuest, All-Pro, Parts Plus, or NAPA LLT. You MIGHT pay a little more, but I've found it's worth it. AZ parts could have killed me twice, so I'll never use them again.
