6" Lift & 40" tires, good in snow?

Hey All,
I am thinking of of putting on 40" tires once I get my 6" lift. I have heard different things about big tires in the snow. the first thing I have heard is that the more traction the better, which would lead me to believe that monster truck tires would get the most traction. And the second thing I have heard is that big tires are horrible in the snow. Can you guys please clear this up for me? I live in Central PA and it snows a lot here, but I also want to lift the truck and get huge meats for it. Would I be sacrificing my only winter vehicle if I do this?

As far as I know, the wider the tire, the worse it is in the snow. It hydroplanes far easier than a skinner tire that 'cuts' into the snow. Thats the reason why guys who enjoy sand dunes have Mickey Thompson tires and the like with extra width. Its the width that keeps them above it all. I had Mickey 39"s on my old 76 F-250, and they were garbage all in all. I pulled some lift, then put 35"s on, and I had absolutely no regrets. Id like to see if my understanding is correct.

will 39's fit with only a 6 inch lift? i thought it would take more than that.... that being said, i'm a firm believer that a tall skinnier tire will work better than a tall wide tire. it will cut through the snow better much like it would water as stated before...Larry

What kind of Bronco do you have? You're not going to get 40" tires w/ only 6" of lift, 39's even. The biggest you could go w/completely stuffing the wheel wells and you would have rub would be 37's.

I want to do a combo of 6" sus. lift & 3" body lift. I have seen 40" tires under that set up.

Does anyone know if there are skinny 40" tires out there? like 40X12.50? i really want the thornbirds, but I have not found them in a 40" tire. Let me know if you guys know anywhere I can get them from.

Thanks

i'd have to recommend Goodyear MTR's. I have a set of 35's and they are great. Haven't had any traction problems yet, and the sidewalls are stong. They have 37's now, and they are coming out with a 40 incher. Looks pretty sweet.

here is my two cents... I understand that big tires are cool and great, and that skinny tires work best in snow... but PLEASE.. PLEASE... PLEASE dont put 40x12.50s on there, not that I think you could even find them, but those would be freaking UGLY!

they would look like frickin pancakes! drivin around with big ole black flapJacks under your bronc...

I think I am gonna have nightmares tonight!

HaHa!!!!

thats sooo funny. I agree, it would look gross. I think I am ust gonna stay with my 33" tires for the winter, and put the 40"er's on durring the regular season. Now how bad do ya think that will look? 9" lift with 33" tires??!!! HaHa!!! Anyone know of any pictures of this kind of set up (33" W/ 6"sus. life & 3" body lift)??

Thanks!

Ryan we still dont know what year truck you have along with its current setup, like motor, gears and so on.

If you rig is newer with the soft front end then going to a 40" tire will cause reliability issues with your drivetrain. if you dont have gears of at least 456's then you wont even turn them. I would not go over 37's if you want to keep the truck happy. Now if you have the solid front axle the bigger tires wont be as bad. but gears should be your first concern after getting the lift.

I believe you need to do a search on this topic and gets some more info on this setup. it can get very expensive

6" Lift & 40" tires, good in snow?

Sorry Guys,
I have a 1983 XLT with a 302 and no lift, sitting on 33"X12.50 mud tires. I am thinking about going smaller actually. Maybe a 6" lift with 37's or 38's. Can I get the gears first? Or will that hurt somthing and/or mess with anything.

It depends, if your already running 33's not really it might run alittle high in the rpms during hwy speeds but thats all and when you go to the bigger tires it will be just right. I wouldnt go for less then 456's if you going to run bigger then 35's. also what tranny do you have. is it 4speed,auto???
