I understand we don't have powerstrokes, however there are some of these idi owners that want to add a turbo to their idi trucks and I just found this.

ya, there are a lot that want to, but its not feasible to install a psd turbo to them. its a lot of work, money and too much turbo.

lots of people like the idea.so far i don't think iv read that anyone has actually done it.
i guess it would have to go down by the transfer case to have a place to put it,and plumb it into the exhaust.this would suck for turbo lag when trying to move a loaded truck.
other than for play,i think even if someone did finally do it,that it wouldn't be anything impressive.

The 2000 to 2003 7.3 Stroke turbo should actaully be about right for the IDI.
The housing A/R numbers are not that far off from the ATS numbers.

Where the problem is, is how the Stoke gets oil to and from those turbo's through the turbo pedistal.
Also the exhaust back pressure actuator, near the bottom of the pedistal would have to be eliminated.

Look at that pedistal on the left, then look at the IDI pedistal here.

Then none of the exhaust plumbing will fit, none of the intake plumbing will fit.
The waste gate could be adjusted to make that work.

A 10.5" rear axle and a Dana 60 with 3.73 gears and aluminum wheels with tires on them for 600 dollars, now that is a deal.

That was me (since sold the truck). I ran it for about 5 years. For the time, effort, work, cost, grief, and results, I could have bought a new ATS or Banks.

I have a parts truck with a Banks Sidewinder if I go IDI again.

$600 for both axles (solid front) sounds real good to me... It's too far away though.

I do.

That's a good price for that turbo setup. I need to install a wicked wheel in mine.

Problem there, though, is that the PSD turbo has T04E sized wheels, which means it has a larger turbine wheel and larger compressor wheel, plus overall the turbine housing on them is larger than the T3 sized housing on the IDI turbos.

Still I am curious how well a properly set up turbo of that size would work, something in the T04E range that is.

Unfortunately those are all parts off a super duty...that's a '99+ turbo that he shows there.

If someone wanted axles for a 4x4, what would be wrong with Super Duty axles under say an 87 truck?

Nothing I can think of except the drive shaft on the Super Duty uses bigger U jounts and the lug spacing is metric.

So the wheels with the axles removes one of the problems.
And I would love to run a Super Duty drive shaft in my 86.

If those were not clear down almost to Florida, I would be on the road to go get them right now.

As for the turbo, I don't think the housing size will make that much difference.
I do know most of the 94 to 97 Stoke towing guys are against installing the 99 and up wastegated turbos because of the smaller A/R numbers which causes them more EGT issues when under bigger loads.

In my opinion, the smaller A/R ratio would be a fine match for most pickups in this day and age.
So many are nothing more than large cars, never haul or tow anything.
So with the lower A/R ratio more low end boost which is where most of them are operated.

Running it on an IDI is ghoing to take some serious machine shop work though to get the oil supply and return into and out of the turbo pedistal.

Given how many of the IDI turbo systems are evaporating, ATS and Banks have both dropped them, someone is going to have to come up with an easy way to adapt a Stroke turbo or all of the non turbo IDI's will be staying NA very soon.

Like I said in another post, my son has an 87 6.9.
And we are thinking about adapting a Stroke style turbo system to that motor.
If we get the clearance issues worked out, making the modifications to the 99 Stroke turbo pedistal could be a nice project for a Skills USA Nationals Machine Tools contestant.

See how he is at putting that education/training to a practical application.

150 for a turbo and pedistal to experiment on, sounds like a deal to me.

biggest downfall about those axles are your limited on wheels. gotta be 99+ ford. our trucks use the same exact lug pattern as chevy and dodge. theres 1000 times more wheels out there for us. and a ton cheaper since they go back 30 years.
