I was thinking about buying a 98 explorer limited, it has 157,000 kilometers on it, it is loades and very clean is there anything I should be aware of, i used to have a 95 explorer so I am familiar to some degree. How is the gas mileage and the trany on these. I did notice that the A/C wasnt blowing cold.
Thanks for any info.
Thats pretty low miles for one of them really, at least I think so. Thats only 97,555 miles. I have 174,000 miles on my 5.0L AWD 98 Mountaineer ( 280,000 km ) and the only thing I have had the most problems with are front wheel bearings. Other than that I have had very good luck with mine. Its not much for gas mileage, about 15 mpg (about 24km) around town and 20 mpg (32 km) on the highway. I think I converted that right, lol...
Thanks, I have read that the V6 has 205 HP and a 5 speed auto is that true. I would guess that fixing a blend door would be a big job.
The trans is a most likely a 4R70, 4 speed overdrive. The blend door has been repaired in a number of posts rather quickly by cutting into the housing , or it can be a long ordeal by removing the dash and all to do it. Read the various posts.
The 205 horse V6 was the OHC 4.0. The trans that comes with that is a 5 speed auto.
Both are potential trouble.
The cam tensioners in the early OHC 4.0s wear out prematurely. To do the rear one requires pulling the engine. (It's a cobbed up cam drive, using a conventional cam-in-block timing set to a cam blank, then driving the driver side cam off that in the front. The passenger side is driven off it in the back.)
I got 15.5 mpg in mixed lead-footed driving. Best I ever got was 20 when it was new going to Las Vegas. Worst I get is 11 in short trip babysitter duty.
If you're a gambler with a tolerance for expensive repairs, go for it.
