As many of you may know i have a 91 F150 that i got a heck of a deal on.. I pulled the motor and tranny out of it (5.0L EFI and a 4x4 E40D) and due to the tranny being wore out and the motor seeing its better days..i plan to replace both.. I got a 5.0L efi out of my old 93 f150 2 wheel drive that i am putting back in it. Well i thought everything was going smoothly putting the tranny i bought (a two wheel drive e40d) and the new motor together, we set the torque in place, then lined it all up and bolted the torque and everything up and put the tranny bolts in and snugged them all up evenly.. Well once we got the bolts in and tightened up good, we tried to get the torque and flywheel to turn. We couldnt get them to turn, I checked to make sure the transmission wasnt in park and everything and still nothing, it was tight and wouldnt turn. We even put a wrench and socket on the front of the motor and tried getting it to turn that way and nothing at all.. We loosened the bolts up and tried turning it and it worked, then dad was tightening them up as i was still turning it and got bout three quarters of the way tightened and then it wouldnt turn any more at all.. Any ideas on why its binding up when we tighten down the transmission bolts? We are thinking its something to do with the torque converter er the drive line or the flywheel.. Just figured i would try and see on here what yall thought.. gonna tear it back apart in the morning and see if i can figure out whats going on.. Any help would be greatly appreciated..
Sounds like the converter was not completely lined up , probably missed one spline or the pump....
DON'T FORCE IT.. You will wipe out the pump... Hope you haven't already....
When the converter is all the way in there will be about 1/4 inch space between the converter and flexplate with the bell housing pulled up tight to the motor...
i havent forced it any so hopefully everything is ok.. once it wont turn anymore we backed off the bolts...and tried it again, once it tightened up again we stopped and said we would try and figure things out next chance we got.. another problem i found im gonna have is the wiring harnesses on the two motors dont match up, so i gotta figure out what im gonna do there too... not quite sure what to do about that
after doing some measuring we figured out that the flywheel is what is keeping it from turning, the e40d and the AODs have different flywheels i do believe. So tomorrow im gonna get out the impact and get the flywheels changed out of the old motor and put onto the new motor. Then all thats left is figurin out what i am gonna do with the wiring harness.. that could be a real pain..
