Ive been having some issues with my truck starting. It turns over just fine, but occasionally doesnt. My GEN light intermittently goes on and off and my after market AMP gauge bounces between 30-60 amps. Any ideas??
I bought what my local Napa said was a brush kit for my generator for seven bucks. Not much to it, 2 springs, a small black square bloack (the brush?) and a piece of wire. Is this correct. Their computer said it was for my truck but listed as an alternator brush kit ?? I told them I needed it for a generator and they said thats all they have.
last thing.....need a water pump. where can I buy?
I had to replace my generator in my 292. Mine was rusted/packed with dirt and was completely seized up. A new one will run you around 100 bucks, and when i say new i mean rebuilt. Im not sure what the problem with yours is though. A water pump shouldn't be hard to find either, just google 292 water pump and you should find one.

Sounds to me like ya got a bad wire. I would clean all the connections and check the wiring for bare or broken spots. I would just bet that replacing the Gen would not fix the intermittent problems.
might want to check the regulator too. a generator won't work to well if your regulator is not working.
I went around and around with mine, finally switched to a 1-wire alternator. it's not very original, but it works.
I've also seen modern alternator built into the generator body, to keep look original, but get modern alternator performance, but those are spendy, about $370 if I recall.
let me know if you are interested, can get you name of suppliers..

The generator brush kit (set) is NOT the same as used with any alternator.
C1AZ10069A .. Generator Brush Set (Motorcraft GB11)
The set consists of two brushes, these attach to the inside of the rear cover plate of the generator.
Fits ALL 1961/64: FoMoCo Passenger Cars (except 1963/64 T-Birds), F100/350's and Econolines.
Alternators became standard equipment on everything in 1965except Thunderbird's, which were the first FoMoCo vehicle to have it factory installed in 1963.
Alternators were optional on 1961/64 trucks, but these were Leece-Neville's, totally different than what T-Birds and 1965 and later vehicles used...which were Auto-Lite's.
NAPA prolly has the correct generator brush kit, but what you have to understand when owning old rolling piles of misery is: Some parts are not listed in autoparts store computers.
They are only listed in the paper parts catalogs...which are usually stuffed under the counter. The trick is...to get the parts cluck to actually look in one!
You should be able to get the waterpump from NAPA, but again, it may only be listed in the paper parts catalogs.
Ok thanks for the info. The young guy at Napa didnt sound like he knew what he was talking about.
I did find a broken wire on the solenoid that goes to the coil, i think. Fixed it. seemed to help. Been having lighting issues too. Removed the light switch and it was corroded. That got my dash lights working again. Then found broken wire coming from steering coulmn, white with lt. blue stripe. Fixed it but dnt know what it goes to. Can anyone send me wiring dia. for the coulmn wires.
Lastly...diagram for ignition switch wires. The heavy gauged pink wire was loose.
Any one have any part numbers for the generator brushes kit and a water pump. Ive had no luck at Napa and they even looked in the book. Their book stopped at 1965.
