In theory it should just pop out, but that's not always the case. Ever tried to pop out a CPS that's been in a motor for a long time? It's dang near impossible!! I've broke an old CPS trying. Same with the VSS. Broke one trying like crazy to get it out.
It had been in the rear end since 1993 (this was last summer) and nothing I could do allowed it to pop out. It'd twist side to side just like the op. I tried to drill into it and easy-out it, but being a magnet, it's too hard. I ended up pulling the back cover and using a long screwdriver to pry it out from the inside.
