if it was working fine until lately and started doing this it would be my guess that the sender went to heaven.oil pressure in the sensor is what turns off the light as it breaks the connection. Dutch
Your 66 could have two sending units and two wires for oil pressure. One for the light and one for the factory gauge. Make sure you have the correct wire connected to the light. Connection could be switched at the dash or connected to the wrong sending unit. The sending unit for the light should be a small round unit, the sending unit for the gauge is a larger (about 2") cylinder type. Our if you only have one sending unit, it could be the one for the gauge. Hope that helps.
Yeah i dont have a factory gauge, the only factory gauge that works is the speedo and the oil light, missing the fuel gauge part of the cluster. It dose have 3 aftermarket gauges hanging from the bottom oud the dash but only the water temp is hooked up. It runs a little warm but I need a fan shroud. I have the oil gauge, can i buy just the tubing and fittings from like auto zone or checkers?
Newer type oil pressure guages do not use tubing, the sending unit hooks up to the guage with 1 wire, no hot oil in the cab! Check your aftermarket guage to see what type of hookup it is, I would not use it if has to have an oil line ran to it. I would pony up for a new guage!
Yeah those other gauges arent cheap either, ive never had a problem with the oil line leaking and this is the first time im hearing of the wire type gauge.
the original type of wiring on trucks that had the standard oil idiot light and those with the optional oil pressure gauge had two totally different type of connections...totally idiot proof...the standard one had a blade connector that slips at a 90 degree angle over the end contact of it. The larger can used with the gause has a 90 degree molded rubber elbow type push on connector...exactly like the brake light switch....its wire is red and white as i recall...

Nothings totally idiot proof. The last parts truck I bought, the guy had the ignition switch go out so he wired in a house light switch. I've seen them crossed.
The sender is located on the oil filter adapter behind the oil filter.

More likely cause is a newer motor with a gauge sender only was installed and the oil presser light wire from the truck was hooked to this incorrect sender. If so, a new oil pressure light sender will fix the problem.
