After several weeks of busting my a$$ and saving many $'s, I finally was able to purchase a 64 F-100 I've had my heart set on. I am just glad all the overtime is over for a short time. Not much wrong with it. Needs the correct year model tailgate(which I already have), some front leaf spring bushings and a better radiator. I do have one question. The truck has the original generator(that has been rebuilt) and it test fine. My question is why does the generator light stay on when the truck is running? The light gets brighter the higher the engine revs.
Gorgeous truck!
When my T-bird had the gen light issue, it was because of the old voltage regulator. Search here and the electrical forum for all the test procedures, better to test everything and be sure than just slap parts in. Autozone carries new ones for Under $25, that's where I got mine, since the local shop asked $70+ for one...
Check the battery cables. 1956 and later FoMoCo vehicles are negative ground. It''s possible someone hooked the battery cables up backwards.
The batteries used in these trucks were the same group numbers as GM & ChryCo vehicles with one MAJOR difference = the terminals are reversed.
People unaware remove the correct battery, do not pay attention to the terminals, then install a GM/ChryCo battery, then attach the negative cable to the positive terminal, the positive cable to the negative terminal.
Then...they wonder why the the light on dash lights up..and stays lit up, or the guage shows a discharge. Within hours, the battery goes dead. Now, they aren't going anywhere.
The other possibility is that the generator was recently serviced and when reinstalled wasnt polarized correctly...I had the same issue as you describe on a 61 Buick I used to have..nothing a quick trip to the electricians shop cant fix...no need to remove the generator either...just drive it there...
Thanks guys. I am going to replace the tires and rims with something that looks more era specific, but want to keep the wide stance. Maybe some wide wimbledon white rims with baby moon caps or wide chrome steelies with baby moons. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for all the electrical advice also.
