Funky Torque Converter? Need some expert input
So, my truck is a very, very low mileage 1989 F250 460/7.5L with a non-OD C6 auto trans. I picked it up about a year ago, put about 5K miles on it, some decent towing, and she's been a great truck.
The other day I was merging onto the freeway, got up to speed (about 55-60, I don't push her) and for a split second it feel like all the "oomph" was gone. I dropped maybe 4 MPH and it came right back. The engine didn't stutter during this time--same revs, just all the "go" left and came right back. Almost felt like someone had hit the brakes.
So the other day I was filling up at the gas station, and I left the truck running (it's friggin hot here, so had to keep the A/C goin
) and I noticed a metallic "vibration" sound. It seems to be coming from the bottom-front of the trans, almost exactly where the torque converter would be. I can't completely eliminate maybe some exhaust heat shield from rattling since it also runs right through that area (tried poking and probing to no avail), but it almost certainly sounds like it's originating from the converter area.So now I'm worried. This morning driving about 45 MPH down a straight, flat road I could swear I feel a slight drag come and go. Barely detectable, almost like slighly pushing the brake and letting up.
What do you guys think? Could it be the converter? Would that also explain the new "rattly" vibration noise? Any suggestions on what I should try to diagnose further?
Thanks guys!
Hopefully other opinions will follow soon.
I've been hunting around the forums quite a bit since I posted that and found a few other posts referring to a "bump" when driving--that's almost what it felt like. Almost all of them suggest swapping out the filter/fluid, and in most cases it seems to help.
I think I'm just going to do that preventatively this weekend (not knowing the full service history of the truck). The dipstick looks clean, nice maroon color--maybe even a little overfilled. But it couldn't hurt.
