We have a 1999 XLT Expedition 4X4 with the 5.4L
and 17in. wheels. What is the largest size tire we can fit on it without lift or fender mods. Also what company makes mud terrain tires that will fit a 17in. wheel. Thanks.
I know that BF Goodrich makes the all terrains in the 17 inch size I saw them in a four wheel drive magazine not sure how big we can go without modifications I just asked the same question on the xog e mail forum if I get an answer I will let you know
I RECENTLY SAW A NAVIGATOR WITH A SET OF SUPER SWAMPER MUD TIRE ON IT!! BOY DID THAT THING LOOK STUPID! MUD TIRES ON A LUXURY SUV? WERE DID THAT GUY COME FROM?
I read in one of the four wheel magazines that you can run 32x11.50.16's on a 16x8 rim and not lose any turn radius etc. They also said that you can run 33x12.50x16's also on a 16x8 rim with only minor fender modification. I'm thinking of doing the latter with my 98 5.4l Expedition. I was thinking of replacing the front stock springs with a heavier performance spring to give it a one-inch lift and then add some air springs inside the rear coil springs to even it out. According to the experts at the National Tire and Wheel website, this is possible. You might want to try their site. They have an online person 24 hours a day to answer questions..........
You can put up to 33"/12.50" tires on your Expy w/o modifying the body. The tire you should have are P265/70/R17 right? These are about 31.5" tall when calculated out. It's real ough to find a 33 in a 17". If you find something let me know. I've been thinking about trading for 16's. The options for tires are much better.
Your owner's manual will give you the range of acceptable tire sizes.
The service manager at my dealership specifically warned me against trying to go outside of the factory-approved sizes. He said that the Expy's computer programming assumes the factory-installed tire size, and if it were not present several systems would be using incorrect data to make their adjustments.
He said the dealership would not change the tire size, but that there were many 3rd party shops that had no such qualms.
One of the reasons that the dealer is hesitant to put a larger tire on the wheel (firestone replacements also) is because it will actually allow you to put more mileage on the vehicle's warranty.. each size.. if i'm not mistaken gives the speedo a - 5% reading variation. So if my math is correct, you should get about 5% more miles /Kms on the vehicle.
I just went through this with my 98 expedition. No one has any good deals on the 17 inch BFG all terrains. I ended up getting American Racing "bajas" 16x8 and put on 275x75x16 all terrain t/s's.What a diffrence in the look.Nothing rubbed at all.I'm heading to the beach in Mexico tommorow so I will update when I get back. I got most of the info on this site so check the archives, poolman
