Working on my wifes expedition. This time around been focusing on plugs and coils.
2000, 5.4, 140K
Drivers side, 3rd plug back from the front.
I removed the coil pack and noticed motoroil on the boot. Went ahead and removed the plug. It was soaked in oil, I mean just dripping.
So I've been trying to look down into the cyl to see if i can find any oil down there. Went to the extent of using a tube and syringe to see if I could draw oil out... got nothing. Even swabbed down in there and can't seem to find any.
I don't want to assume its ok or even assume that somehow oil just dripped down into the plug area. The truck doesn't throw any codes, I would also assume if it had that much blow by it would throw some kind of code.
The reason for doing this job is because I've been searching for some popping noise upon acceleration which seems like it would be more suspension related rather than a malfunctioning coil pack.
I believe the problem is the gasket/seal between the cover and head at the spark plug. Take a look at the parts pic at any ford parts site and you will see them.
This will show you the parts involved, it's for a V10 but they are the same. In the pic there are 10 of what looks like washers, in your engine there are only 8. When I install mine I ues just a small coating of black RTV it insure a good seal.
What he means is at the top of the spark plug well is a round gasket sandwiched between the valve cover and the head. This gasket is leaking and allowing oil to seep down to the plug.
