About 2 weeks ago I noticed that at idle (in gear) my tach would surge up/down occasionally about 200rpm. Today initial start was fine. After running the truck about and hour, shutting down, and trying to restart about 30 minutes later I had a very extended cranking time to start. Around 10 seconds. I drove another 45 minutes, shut down for about 20 minutes, and had another 10-15 second extended cranking start. What are the possible causes? I have no "check engine" lights lit. I keep my fuel filters changed about every 20K, synthetic Mobile1 for HD Diesels every 12K, oil filters avery 7K. I have 96k on the engine. I stopped in at a mechanic. He said possibly injectors, or HPOP(high pressure oil pump). I called another mechanic and he said possible EGR issue, and that they have some special cleaning system to fix it. Bottom line is all of the options were going to be pricey. Neither of the places I talked to are "diesel" places just normal auto repair. I dont necessarily want to hit the dealership. Any recommendations on a good diesel mechanic in the Dallas area (and further north)? Any help is appreciated.
A word of advice…… Some of the guys within this forum, with the most knowledge to help you, work at the places you so kindly referred to as “stealer-ship”. I agree that OEM parts and services are not cheap. That is probably why this website is frequented as much as it is. Almost every post bleeds “Can someone help me I am trying to save money”. Next time, you might want to hit on their wife and then ask for help. Who knows, some may help you more if you take their wife.
dallas is a big place....were about.
sounds like you may have 2 issues going on.
1) hard start/long crank when hot.
2)surge
they may or may not be related.
so far as the surge goes you can try and disconnect the ebp and see of it goes away.
If it does you may have a vgt issue or a ebp issue.
so far as the surge try and disconnect the icp sensor and see if it goes away. if so you may have a biased icp sensor.
