autometer gauges

I apologize for posting yet another thread on gauges. I searched for about 5 hours without really answering the questions I have.

I own a 74F100 2wd Custom. My problem is that my guages with the exception of the speedometer are inop as well as the lighting for all. The turn signals work and that is only sometimes. I have been on a journey for about 2 weeks now trying to find a whole new (used) guage cluster that works. I have found many that are in good condition, but all for other year/model trucks that won't direct wire in. I have learned that Ford made at least one guage for every year/model truck between 73-79. My pigtail plug is also broken. The printed circuit is missing peices of copper. The PO has also destroyed the factory harness.

So...to make a long story into a short question. Because of the difficulty in finding a factory replacement without spending alot of money and then not knowing if it will definetly work. Is there a brand of autometers for Fords that will most acuratly work with fuel sending unit, and Speedometer? I just installed a brand new fuel sending unit. It seems like all the rest of the gauges come with new sending units i.e; oil press.
gauges.

Sorry for the novel, but wanted to be as acurate as I can.

I did something like what you're considering in my 66. Oil pressure, water, speedo, tach...they're all generic...they'll work for any vehicle. Really, the only specific one you need to worry about is the fuel gauge...I believe it's a 10/73 ohm unit.

Yes,
That is what I am looking to do. I just didn't know where to start as far as getting the right gauges. Do you wire them in your self or do they usually come with kits/adapters.

they're not difficult to wire in. I used a vacuum gauge instead of a volt meter...figured it would be more useful. that simply plugs into a vacuum source. The tach is simple...simply connect it to an ignition on power source, then another lead to the - side of the coil, that's it. The speedo just plugs right in, literally. (the speedo cable on our trucks is different than my vintage mustang, so you may need an adaptor..autometer has that)....oil pressure is easy...it's a mechanical unit. I ordered a steel braided line. Summit has those in different lengths. do NOT run the plastic line that comes with the gauge unless you enjoy oil leaks in the cab. That just screws into the oil sender hole....water temp easy too...it comes with the line attached and it just threads into the hole where the stock sender is in the block.

as for the lighting, just use the stock inst cluster light bulbs...cut off the stock light bulbs and use that wiring to connect to the light bulbs that come in the gauge box...

it's all super easy...

Thank you for breaking it all down for me. I just ordered a set of Old Tyme white gauges from eGauges. I will post pics when I have the job done.

sweet. I'm interested to see how you do the gauge panel. I'm going to put mine on the passenger spot on that blank spot to the right of the radio in my 77
