Temp guage not working....

Hey guys, my temp guage is not working in my 96 F150 and was wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction as to what to check and how to check it? As far as to check if the sending unit is bad, the guage is bad or if I have a short some where in the electrical. Any feed back is appreciated. Thanks!

start the truck and let it warm up. Take a good look at the temp gauge. Unplug the sender. Take a look again. Did it change? (pegs, I think) Sender is bad.

The cheapest way would be to get yourself a helper and sit them in the truck with the KOEO (key on engine off). Then you unplug the temp sender and ground the wire for 1 second and have them tell you if the needle moved. If the needle moves then the sender is bad. It shouldn't "peg" if it's bad because it relys on a resisted ground signal to operate the gauge.
Without knowing what engine you have I can't explain in detail where the sender is but it's NOT the one on top of the front of the engine close to where the upper radiator hose meets the block. That is the coolant temp SENSOR you want the SENDER.

I have the 4.9 and I have located the sending unit already. When I unplug the wires from it does it matter which one of the two I ground out?

If there is 2 wires then you've got the wrong plug. Your prob looking at the coolant temp SENSOR right on the front of the block on the coolant flange where the upper radiator hose meets the block. You don't want that one. You want the coolant temp SENDER which on a 4.9L is in the very back of the block on the passengers side with 1 wire going to it.
