new to the forums but just wanted to ask a question thats been bugging the heck outta me especially now that im trying to sell my truck.
trucks been great for years but about 2 weeks ago i drove to the movies and when i reach for the radio and the windows neither work...well the head unit is lit up and i can change the station and stuff, even adjust the volume i just cant hear it. the windows on the other hand do absolutely nothing...thankfully their stuck closed and the ac works amazingly.
i dont know if these things are related or not but the day before it was fine then the first time i start it up the next day theyre both screwey....
Greetings. I have the same problem with my 2003 Ford Expedition. If the radio doesn't play, the windows don't operate. Fuses are good and there's power to both components. Initially, there was some type of delay, increasing from 15 seconds to hours over a long period of time. It seems that temperature played some unknown role in the problem. Now, neither the radio will play or windows operate. There is power to both! Actually, I can see the TIME on the radio. Local Ford dealer can't find the problem. I suspect a problem with the security module...
Great. We thought it had been checked, but that should be a simple fix. I really appreciate your reply. Have you seen this problem before? What type of symptoms did you encounter? Are there any other accessories on the "DELAY" relay? Thank you I'm going to do that today. Steve
i 2 have a lil problem but it the opposite the window sometimes take 2 trys to go down but it opens ...the radio has sound but i can't see the stations or the time driving me crazy .....going after market on that ...good luck finding out whats wrong let me know how that goes...
My radio/window problem started over 1 year ago (2008) and was initially diagonosed as a switch problem...over a period of 30 days, the "switch problem" continued to progressed...and then I discovered there was some type of delay between when I started the engine and the window would actuate (up/down). I cleaned the switches with electronic cleaner...still no help. Then, but coincidence, I noticed the radio would not play either...but after a time, the radio display would illuminate and the music would play...that entire cycle repeated over and over but the delay increased from 10 seconds to 45 seconds, to minutes, then hours, then it was permanent. I checked the fuses and cleaned the fuse box and lubricated with electronic grease...nothing. My school trained mechanic could not diagnose the problem even though he witnessed the problem. Ford was reluctant to speculate on the problem and told me that "they needed to observe the problem" to make a diagnosis. fortunately, my truck is in excellent shape and the a/c works fine, but the the window/radio problem was very frustrating. Thank you for your feedback. Steve
hmm ill have to give that relay a shot...
it never had any delay issues they decided to stop working altogether but
can that relay stop me from hearing the stereo?
nope switched relays 4 and 5 in the fuse box (5 being the acc. delay one) and that did nothing so i went down to the auto parts store got 2 new ones...did nothing
so window switches all light up as they should...but they dont work at all
radio turns on and functions just no audio coming out of speakers
and all the fuses and relays seem to be in good shape unless i'm an idiot and skipped over something(its been known to happen)
I was back at the local dealership discussing the "relay delay"...the dealer suggests replacement of the Security Module on the fuse box. I'm wondering if the FORD OBDM reader will detect a faulty Security Module issue. The module is $164. from Ford (sole source), plus installation, and another $89 or so for the diagnosis. It seems like there should be a FORD Technical Service representative that can tunnel down to the problem, but it may take more than a service technician qualification. Does anyone know how to contact FORD Directly (and get a response?)
I'm thinking about trying to locate a part at a local salvage yard. That might not be the best solution, but it might solve the problem. I can't believe that Ford hasn't seen this problem before.
Thank you for responding to my last message. I followed all your instructions even going to the extent of replacing the relays.
After replacing the "accessory delay relay," cleaning the connections and fuses my problem was fixed by FORD...turned out to be a faulty "Instrument Cluster" Total bill: $900 for parts, labor, diagnostics and "Shop Fees". Ouch
FORD had insisted that I bring in the vehicle when the radio/window was functioning...this was problematic because the interval between events was never predictable. Ironically, last week the radio/window worked and I headed directly for Ford. I contacted the service representative and discussed the problem again in detail followed by shutting down the engine and restarting. The problem recurred and the service rep was satisfied that all the power was present, the fuse and relays were functioning.
The instrument cluster is only available from Ford and it is not regularly stocked by the dealership. I was without a vehicle for 7 days. Accroding to the dealer, the cluster needs to be reprogrammed before installation...if that is correct, you may not be able to use a salvaged instrument cluster.
I'm seeing some other posts referring to "radio delay" as well. It appears that this problem is not unique.
Wh1t3Xpo: I would now assume that you need an instrument cluster replacement.
Bottom line: I would like to determine if this problem can be identified using FORD diagnostics and the OBDM readers.
