Unhappy Timing

Well guys, I have another question. Timing. I own a 1978 F150 with a 351M non-california emission, non-egr, well, no emissions control on it whatsoever. Anyways I am down here in south Louisiana and run chevron 87 pump gas. I have my timing in the neighborhood of 14* BTDC and she still cranks fine. I have heard that the higher you can get the timing w/o a lug on crank keep going up until that point, after i hit 16* BTDC i got scared and dropped her back down in the 14-12 BDTC range. What should it be set on? also it is the stock type carb on it motorcraft 2bbl with thermal choke (im assuming 2100 or 2150 2v) thanks a lot guys

This should probably help you.
It sounds like yours is missing from the valve cover.

I don't mean to be picky but it also says 5.8L 351 ci. I know they are the same eng why doesn't it say 400ci? After all that is what it is?
