Hi out there....I am having a quirky thing going on with my temp gauge, which triggers my check gauges, in the system monitor. I can be driving 10 miles or 2 miles and get the check gauges. I look over at the temp gauge and it is pegged(like past the red ). If I shut off the vehicle instantly the gauge goes back to normal and all is well. Sometimes I can go 400 miles between this happening and sometimes it will come back in 2 miles again. I have searched and posted and someone told me it was the thermostat. Others have said it is the temp sensor, in the head, under the intake manifold. Can someone confirm or disconfirm? Thanks again to a great site!
That was happening with my '05' 5.4, now this truck has 210+k miles on it so I figured just change the thermostat and see what happens and it has seem to fix the problem. The thermostat was something like $25 and O-ring $3, 3 jug of coolant took maybe an hour to change.(pliers, 8mm socket, torque wrench, screwdriver to pry the elbow up was all that needed for tools.)
Bought the truck 2500 miles ago and changed the fluid right away. I have lost just a little, in between middle of the hot and cold, from spot on. I have not checked the sensor. what would it ohm out at or how do I check to see if it is working correctly without taking everything apart? Where are the connections located? I wish I had a service manual but thats not the case Why do you ask about the overflow?

Better than not doing nothing at all.
I think that for $28 dollars I will have to give it a shot if I can not diagnosis the problem some other way. thanks
Well, today I replaced the thermostat and I think that I found the problem. Like you guys said it is two pieces and it sticks. Well mine was crack and worn and fell apart on the way out. I wont know if I fixed the problem for a while, but I will post back if the temp issue is not resolved(my guess is that it will be). In any case, this one was bad, and need to be replaced. Thanks again!
Here is a pic of the thermostat, its not clear enough to see the crack.
