crank/no start...

I have a 1989 F250 2wd 4.9l with a 4 spd tranny and dual tanks..... so about a month ago i had no spark and it turned out to be my PIP. Replaced that and the truck ran well for a while.

Now my fuel pump (inline on frame) wasnt priming. Before today i could really hear the pump well when the ignition was first turned on. I Replaced fuel pump and now the new one wont prime. when the key is turned all i hear is the relay click. I jumpered from the + battery terminal using my test light to make sure i have a ground at the pump and i do. I have checked the fuel pump relay, interia switch and tried ground the fuel pump via the eec test plug. Im stuck and really dont know where to go from here.

Should I run power and ground directly to my pump to make sure the new one is good or what ?

Sorry this is kind of long winded but im in need of some help on this one.

Thank you in advance.

You can do that to make sure the pump is good. if it runs after jumping it,you have a circuit/wiring problem.
you ll need a manual for the diagram if you dont have Alldata or something similar.

Thx Neal, tomorrow after work I'll run some wires directly to the pump and report back.

Also just for some more confirmation see if it will start by spraying starter fluid into the throttle body.

I ran a hotwire to the inline pump and the truck runs, the pump kicks on so im guessing i have my power wire shorting to ground or something i dunno. Does anyone by chance have a wiring diagram i could use to chase this down ? i had a chilton but cant seem to find it. thanks for the help. also if i run a hot wire to the pump and put a toggle switch on it so the pumps runs all the time will this burn up the pump ?

Im sure my problem is somewhere in the wiring. I'm not getting power to my pump and i cant run a hotwire to it because the pump isnt considered a steady state pump and it will burn up or flood the engine. I've replaced my relay and have power to my relay so its gotta be in b/w the replay and the inline pump, its just a problem now of tracking it down.

@ 89F20plowtruck: If you run a hotwire to ur truck will it run ? have you tried swapping your eec and fuel pump relays to see if you have a bad relay ? If so you may be having a wiring issue as well. Im almost thinking about converting my 89 over to a carb like i did with my 88 F250 4x4. just have to replace the intake, disturbutor and put a carb on with a small 6-8psi steady state fuel pump.

I ran a hotwire and the pump kicks on. I did not however turn the truck over while I was doing it. I replaced the Fuel pressure reg and the fuel flilter. I have not done the relays. If you could, would you explain how to do that, because I have never done it. When you say the relay's you mean the plugs on the drivers side front wheel well? I really hate this efi. I have had so much trouble with it.

Also the fuel cut off switch or the inerita (however you spell it) is in the down position, which I believe that is where it should be for fuel. is that right?

Yes the relays are on the drivers fender. The fuel pump relay will have a green base and the eec will be brown. Switch the two and see if your pump kicks on with the ignition switch being turned
