I have a 2007 PSD that is stock other than a Magnaflow turbo-back 4 in exhaust. I have a couple of questions.
First Question: What power mods can I do without putting headstuds in? I’ve thought about water/meth injection to start with. I’m more interested in decent daily driver and towing performance than “hot rodding.”
Second question: When I put my foot into the throttle from idle or just off idle the engine is slow to respond the input (2 maybe 3 seconds). The truck can barely get out of its own way sometimes. Is this the nature of turbo lag or could I have fuel supply issue such as clogged injectors or fuel filters that may need to be changed (about 20K miles on the fuel filters at this time)? I plan to change them this week anyway. I use fuel lubrication additives and cetane boosters. (Amsoil or Power Service)
Thanks in advance

Hey Gunny,
Can't help on the first question since I have yet to take the power mod plunge but what you describe in question #2 is indeed the dreaded turbo lag. I bought my PSD (also a 2007) just a few months ago and the lag drove me nuts until I got used to it. Scared the **** out of me the first time I pulled out to make a left turn in front of oncoming traffic and the truck wouldn't go. You learn ways to adapt your driving style after awhile and its not so bad.
First Question: What power mods can I do without putting headstuds in?
Nobody can answer that with certainty. You might have head bolt issues without any power adders. Adding power increases your chances of having problems. You just have to accept the risk. If you want more power, you assume greater risk.
Assuming you are okay with that, custom tunes are the way to go. You can even get tunes to help with the turbo lag, and not add power.
The only thing that fixed it on mine was custom tuning.
It's based on Ford's trying to keep within EPA regs for ALL users, even those who do not take care of their engines/trucks. (you know the types; those who change their oil every 50,000 miles, never change fuel filters, etc...)
I never noticed it on my test drive. But then again, you don't normally get into the situations where lag is a problem, on a test drive (at least I never have).
Which, I think, accounts for so many of us going "I HATE THIS LAG!!"
Thanks for all of your inputs. Guess the water/meth is out for now. I'd drop the money for the headstuds without think twice about it. It's selling the expense to my wife that's the barrier. In fact she'll just mess with me and say "sure get the headstuds, you'll have to take it out of your account for that overpriced toyhauler you want to carry your Harley around in, and by the way that means no more buying chrome for the Harley either."
Wow... THAT brings the phrase "gotta pay to play" up to an ENTIRELY new level.....

Yeah I'm gonna' have to use one of my diversionary tactics...buy her some jewelry and say oh, by the way I .........,or not say anything at all and just use my Man of the House policy of "better to ask forgiveness than permission." Just gotta' time it right.

Tuning will help, but I'd think about having your FICM tuned. I had intake, exhaust, and custom tunes from Innovative, and still had some noticeable lag. I sent the FICM off for reprogramming, and DAMN! PHP did mine. Pretty much wiped all the lag out. It's not really a power adder, but for as much fun as it added to the drivability, I didn't care. For the $125 it cost me, it has been the best upgrade yet. Shouldn't cause any head stud issues. Oh, and I also got 2mpg gain on winter blend.

Well said Bill. PCM tuning isn't necessarily a problem, but, depending on your servicing dealershp FICM tuning might be because of warranty issues, if that's important to you. That's the way I'd go though for "non-power adder". It will definitely help your throttle response and you can get good safe inductive heating from PHP. They will even send you a tuner if you can't send them your FICM--for a deposit of course. Their response time is usually a 24 hr. turn around, IIRC, so that's not bad either.
Couldn't he just use water injection for EGT control and as a "safe" power adder if he doesn't use meth??? I'm studded, but that would be my next "power adder" if I do anything else to my truck. I have plenty of fuel--LOL.
