need some ideas

i dont know what i want to do im fixin to start rebuilding the straight six in my 78 f250 but my mind has been wandering towards buying a v8 to put in it or possibly a diesel engine im wondering if i should order the 588 7.5l eliminator from roush racing or just drop a 460 in it i cant seem to decide any ideas would be great

What's your budget? Like the saying goes "speed cost money! how fast do you want to go?"

The sky's the limit on this question, I like the 460 option because of the power and torque behind it and the variety of upgrades you can do so it, I like the diesel idea, because well lets face it, It just wont quit!!, Rebuilding the straight six, is not a bad idea either because you can always sell a rebuilt six and use it to buy another engine HA HAHA

Personally I don't care for any motor with a liter designation going into a 78. I'd rather see you drop in a 350 than a liter motor, but that's just me.

The 6 is great, but you're not going to get the speed out of it. The 460 on the other hand, as they used to say, will pass everything but a gas station.

The 300 six will take alot of mods and $ to go fast. If you have the $ to contimplate the 588 roush or 460, why mess with the 300 six idea?

If it were me, I'd stick with the 300 and rebuild it. Its a great motor and 418,000 k should prove that.
Thing is an I6 is athing of the past, your truck represents a piece of history. I'm an old I6 fan so I am biased in opinion. I had 2 of these trucks and I can tell you I had more trouble free fun out them than my 69 GTO hotrod I had.

I concur with Saltbranch; 418K on that engine should tell you something right there; those babies are bulletproof reliable. Torquey too.

What exactly is your intended use for the pickup?
