I have an '89 E-150 Van with AOD (Trans Code "T"). The engine (5.0 l) was replaced yesterday with a used one the same size. The mechanic had to use the wiring harness from my old engine, because the new engine came out of a vehicle with a standard transmission and didn't have the wiring to connect to the AOD. My van now has reverse and only one forward gear. It will not shift out of first gear. I have a gut feeling that something else (a chip?) is missing from this new engine since it was set up originally for a standard and not an AOD. Am I on the right track? The "mechanic" is scratching his head. He knew how to install the engine, but that's about all. I still have the old engine for parts. I sure would appreciate any ideas. Thanks!
When the mechanic reinstalled the engine, did he get all the vauum lines hooked up properly? If he removed the shift linkage, did he get it readjusted properly?
Thanks for the reply Flyboy. This tranny doesn't operate with a vacuum line, it appears to be all electronic. I think it gets info from a chip somewhere on the engine. That's why I'm not sure if this engine has that chip, since it came from a vehicle with a standard trans. I am also concerned about the linkage and tv cable adjustment, as you point out.
an AOD trans uses neither vaccum or eletronics for shfting. an 89 van should have a cable from the throttal body to trans linkage . you have either got it out of adjustment or unhooked or missing attachment parts.
The AOD requires the use of a TV(throttle valve)cable or rod. This cable controls the shift points. The wires on the tranny are for neutral indicator and VSS for cruise, etc..
last night I did a filter change kit in my 89 with 7.3 diesel and a c6 tranny, while I was under the truck I found that the vacume line was off so I put it back on where it goes and that made me lose all forward gears took it off and the gears came back, my tranny looks like it will need to be taken out anyways
