Need rapid help if possible

Hi all, got in my truck this morning to go to work, and it would not turn over. I have completely ruled out the battery (lights are bright in the cab, everything electrical comes on, and shows full charge on the jumper/charger. Also no luck with the jump starter).

I assume it's some kind of relay. Turning the key on everything works as normal. When turning it over to start it, it does just like normal, but has a single click in the dash (like a relay closing), and does nothing (not a dead battery type click). Acts like it does if you were to try to start it in gear.

Definitely NOT the battery, has anyone had this happen and determined what it was?

Hi, it will not start in neutral and there is no remote starter or alarm installed.

Plan on checking the the starter fuse, couldn't today as I had to get to work so will start that for troubleshooting, but won't have long to work on it before I have to turn around and leave again.

Can newer vehicles have the solenoid shorted across to turn over the starter to make sure it is functional like we used to do on old cars?

Saw a relay listed in the owner's manual also, any way to test those? Thanks again.

OK, local dealer advised shorting the solenoid across won't hurt anything to try starting it. However I won't be home from work until tomorrow morning to give that a try.

Anyone have any ideas what can cause this issue? Thanks, Kevin

If you have someone to help.Have them get in and turn the key like you are trying to start the truck and while they are doing that you crawl under the truck with a hammer and tap the starter a couple times.Sometimes a starter will get a dead spot in it.

Yeah had that happen on some old 70s era vehicles, didn't know that still happened on newer ones. Older ones alway did a spinning sound at least, this one nothing at all from the starter, but will still try it too.

Anyone know if the relays go out or how to test them? Thanks again.

Talking STARTER CIRCUT TROUBLESHOOTING

FYRMNK1,<O</O
HERE ARE A FEW THINGS TO CHECK THAT MAY STEER YOU IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION.
POSSIBLE CAUSES ARE <ST1BATTERY</ST1, FUSE, STARTER MOTOR, SOLENOID
TRY THESE TESTS AND IT SHOULD TELL YOU WHAT'S DEFECTIVE.
<O</O
1) MEASURE THE VOLTAGE BETWEEN THE STARTER RELAY TERMINAL AND GROUND. IF THE VOLTAGE IS NOT GREATER THAN 12.5 VDC REPAIR THE <ST1BATTERY</ST1 TO STARTER RELAY CABLE. THEN TEST AGAIN. IF THE VDC IS GREATER THAN 12.5 VDC GO TO NEXT STEP.
<O</O
2) MEASURE THE VDC BETWEEN THE STARTER MOTOR SOLENOID POSITIVE TERMINAL AND GROUND. IF THE VDC IS NOT GREATER THAN 12.5 VDC THAN REPAIR THE CIRCUIT BETWEEN THE <ST1BATTERY</ST1 AND THE STARTER SOLENOID ALSO CLEAN AND TIGHTEN THE CONNECTIONS AT THE <ST1BATTERY</ST1 TERMINALS. TEST AGAIN
IF THE VDC IS 12.5 OR GREATER GO TO NEXT STEP
<O</O
3) CONNECT ONE END OF A FUSED (15 AMP) JUMPER WIRE TO THE POSITIVE TERMINAL OF THE <ST1BATTERY</ST1 AND TOUCH THE OTHER END TO THE STARTER SOLENOID “S” TERMINAL
DOES THE STARTER ENGAGE? IF NOT INSTALL NEW STARTER THEN TEST SYSTEM AGAIN. IF THE STARTER SOLENOID DOES ENGAGE CONTINUE TO NEXT STEP
<O</O
4) NOTE: THE STARTER MOTOR WILL NOT ENGAGE THE RING GEAR UNLESS THE “S” TERMINAL IS POWERED.
CONNECT ONE END OF THE FUSED (15 AMP) JUMPER WIRE TO THE POSITIVE TERMINAL OF THE <ST1BATTERY </ST1AND THE OTHER END TO THE STARTER MOTOR TERMINAL. DOES THE STARTER MOTOR SPIN? IF NOT INSTALL NEW STARTER AND TEST SYSTEM. IF STARTER MOTOR DOES SPIN THAN GO TO NEXT STEP.
<O</O
5) MEASURE THE RESISTANCE BETWEEN THE STARTER RELAY TO THE STARTER SOLENOID AND THE “S” TERMINAL. IF THE RESISTANCE IS MORE THAN 5 OHMS THAN INSTALL A NEW STARTER MOTOR TO STARTER RELAY HARNESS. IF IT IS LESS THAN 5 OHMS INSTALL A NEW STARTER RELAY.
HOPE THIS HELPS<O</O

All is fixed, thanks again to everyone for the assistance. This site is always great!

Was the starter solenoid. Was able to run down the checks to verify before guessing at it.

Of course as my luck usually goes, I got to change out the starter twice as the first one I replaced it with, the plunger wouldn't retract after it started (now that's a cool sound), but hey, all is good now.

Thanks again. Kevin
