I recently sent out my 289 for rebuild. Drove 400 miles with rebuild and after replaced oil for first time, have since had a bent valve at #8, and three separate times with rocker arms coming off. I have performed valve adjustments twice with engine running. tighten down valves to 0, loosen till you hear the tap and half turn to tighten. the last time we tried adjusting with engine off. it seemed to last a bit longer this time, though there was still a slight tap from the top end. this time, found two rocker arms off the stud. Keepers still in place. This would be the fourth time i've had the take the valve covers off in a month and a half, one time taking one of the heads off. Any ideas as to what could be causing this. oil levels are optimal. 5 quarts. no bent push rods. Anyone out there with similar concern?
Place a straight edge across the studs to make sure none have pulled. You have hyd lifters so bring up each cyl to TDC after comp stroke and torque both valves to 18-25 ft.lbs starting with #1 then rotate engine 90 degress which should bring up the next cyl in your firing order. Repeat till done. I'm assuming that you broke in the cam properly with the right breakin additive.
