Today I looked at an 05 Expedition police vehicle up for auction tomorrow. Very clean, 94k miles 5.4 engine, looks good. They let me start it up but not drive it. I tried to rev the engine and listen for knocks or anything funny. At about 2800 rpms, the motor would surge then back off, but not go over 2800 rpms. Like it was starving for air or fuel. At lower rpms it idled fine. Any ideas if this is a problem or maybe just an adjustment? Want to use this as a work vehicle. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Skip

It's a safety feature to prevent ignorant people from blowing up engines by reving them too high without a load on them, such as when in neutral or park.

Damn I paid $8K for ' 03 Eddie Bauer back in 2007 with 70K on the clock 7750 is way high..unless it was a true police package vehicle.
My wife had a 1992 Grand Marque Police package car(same basic package as a CrownVic) - it was stupid fast, all heavy duty cooling, suspension and electrical. All the coolant hoses were blue silicone, the Master Cyl and Batterycables said Police or Limo use only - sweet car. Ex sheriff's personal ride. We got over 300,000 miles when we sold for the 03 Exp.
Yes, it was a police package...rubber mat floor, vinyl seats, etc. Would have bid more but the mileage scared me...plus idle time was a factor. We also have a Crown Vic Interceptor...awesome vehicle...it's a scalded dog on the highway and very comfortable...front push bars come in handy too. Skip
The SSV Expedition is not upgraded the way P71 Crown Vics are realtive to their daily driver bretheren . The SSV package is a stock Expedition that deletes all the creature comforts and the console for easy wiring of the radio stack that goes in that space. I too have had a former police car (9C1 Impala) which was bullet proof because it was over built. I'd shy away form an SSV Expy because it isn't over built, and as pointed out the mileage is an understatement because of the idling. When times were better police departments would get rid of their cars in the 75-80k range using a 1.5 or higher multiplier for a representative mileage to justify that they were almost worn out. Cars have gotten better, municipal money has gotten tighter and most hold them longer now.
