I have an '08 F450 DRW with the 6.4 PSD and 4.88 rear. I haul a 41' fifth wheel that weighs ~14,000 pounds empty. Recently had the oil, fuel filters, and transmission serviced at 35,000 miles.
I noticed on our last two weekend trips that as we head up long hills, the transmission doesn't seem to downshift to the next gear, but it slows down to 50 mph and then downshifts to an even lower gear and the rpm's go up to about 3000 like it's skipping 5th gear.
I would take it to the dealer with the trailer on and show them..
still in warranty, make em fix it..
at least go over and get it documented before 36000 miles..
even if u have extended warranty..
sounds odd to me.. and I hate having tranny serviced for just this kind of problem.. stir something up..
my sons 99 silverado has 175000 miles on it, never had the tranny fluid changed.. we are afraid to do it now.. might be all that is holding it together!..
something is certainly not right. Might just be a simple programming issue. I take it no codes so Sam is on the right track here. Take it in with the trailer and have them test drive your fav hill.
Aren't the '08-'10s a 5 speed? Skipping 4th maybe? I had the same setup ('08 F-450 w/ 4.88s), I didn't pay real close attention, but I remember it holding 5th for quite a while. Are you sure that's different than what it did before? I know when I have anything done to my truck, sometimes I overthink things that are really nothing.
From what I have read, these transmissions will skip 4th gear when not in tow/haul. When in tow/haul, all gears are used. I may be wrong here, I can not find the link where I found this info. But I am almost sure I read that somewhere.
