I bought a nice bronco a couple months back. My plan was to outfit it for the off road. It came with a Gt-40 302ci crate motor. It has aggressive high lift cams, and they make it roars like a lion.
It needs a 4x4 computer. It was out when i purchased it. Where can i find a new Computer(module) for the push button 4x4?? An what the estimated cost?
Also it has 150,xxx on the automatic tranny, would a shift kit hurt it?
Finally is the any recommended mechanically upgrades for the bronco(rear gears etc. ). to be good on muddy roads but okay during high way travel (55mph)
Mechanical upgrade recommendation number one would be to swap out the electronic transfer case and put in a manual. (This is just my opinion not a requirement.) The electronic t-case shift motors are prone to failure and frequent need of replacement. If you have the automatic locking hubs, replace them with Mile Marker or Warn premium manual versions (simple swap). If you plan on stuffing larger tires under it or lifting it, re-gear the axles accordingly. Check out the Red Link in my signature for more information.
Thanks for the response. They are manual Warn Hubs. Its not the shift on the fly. I hate them. But i've been told by many mechanics that the push button computers in early 90's fords may last 10yrs. Which sucks, but i expect the computer to only be like 120buks or so.
I plan on putting a minor 2in performance BODY lift. Just so i can lift 33x12.5x18 tires on my bronco. Maybe 34in.
Will not lift higher than 2in.
The shift computer is what drives the shift motor in the t-case. If replacing the computer fixes the issue now, great. I just felt I should warn you that the shift motor is more frequently the problem than the computer and they are about $75-80 each time you have to replace them. The Borg-Warner 1356 transfer case is identical in its installation/bolt pattern between the electronic and manual versions. The floor of your Bronco also has the hole in it for the shift lever already. It is just covered by an inspection cover.
If you have gotten used to your 302's performance with 3.55:1 gears in the axles and stock size tires, you will be very disappointed with your hill climbing and passing power if you put 33's or 34's under it without re-gearing. 4.11:1 gears would be the minimum. Many folks prefer 4.56:1 but I like what I get with 33's and 4.11's.
I wouldn't recommend doing any performance modifications on that old transmission, 150k miles is a lot for any trans. I'd suggest a rebuild and valve body tweaks if you want a firmer shift.
A rebuild of an E4OD is not cheap. Even if you are brave enough to do it yourself. And a 93 most definitely has an E4OD and does NOT have the post-1994 internals upgrade that Ford did so there are a good number of the internal components that will HAVE to be replaced by virtue of the fact that the pre-94 components were tossed in favor of the upgraded versions in the 94+ models.
as it sits now it has 355 gears with 31in tires. And got responsible tire clearance still. I go hunting alot. And after a heavy days rain my hunt club is terrible. Easily 2in/3in of mud, and the clay is the worst thing. I need Gripping tires, And putting a new 4x4 module in it is a must. I figures the small body lift would add couple inch clearance, so mud grips would work no prob.

You're right on all that. I'd just run it the way it is until it dies.
the e40d tranny is in great shape. It shifts hard in 1st, but smooth in everything else, and even 1st gear aint to bad.
But i plan on purchasing a E40D tranny from EVERDRIVE.COM. Which i can get for $800-$1100 buks depending on the warranty i want.
But after install i'm looking a $1400/$1600. For the tranny.
an im looking into 4.11 gears, also. like you recommended.
1) How much to Put 4:11 gears in my bronco and where can i buy them
2) where can i buy a new 4x4 electronic computer. ( it a push button with manual hubs)
With the 4x4 and the newer gears with decent tread tires id like to see it performance.
this isn't a mud bogger, it my cruiser, but it also my hunting vehicle !
Do you think with a 2in body lift, 33in/34in Aggressive A/T or mud terrain tires with working 4x4 and 4;11 gears will perform in clay and decent amount of mud?
It will work great on mud, i've done it with 31 and even smaller tires (my current ones). If you go hunting alone a lot i would add a winch, just in case there is no one around to pull you out. Any name brand will be ok, but i would stay clear from newer Warn models, i keep hearing ppl complaining about them around here. Anything over 9500 lbs capacity should be comfortable pulling your truck. You should also add a recovery kit to that.
My main issue is the club i hunt on is leased from a timber company, and when they run the skiders in there to haul out logs, they make super big ruts. and even tho we fill them in be for season starts a gud rain and its a mess. My friends 2006 dodge 2500 deisel got so stuck we had to borrow a tractor. Although i did sumthing stupid( stoping in the mud, which ive learned to be a NO,NO)
I also gotta fix the rear window. It goes down like one inch, but then stops, an it will go back up, Im thinking its a bent track. But anyways. The wench idea is a good idea, i was considering ordering front tow hooks, but maybe a wrench is a better way to go!
Check out the sponsor for this forum. Not certain about the computer but I've always trusted Randy's Ring & Pinion for gearsets. They typically spec Yukon brand and they are there when the questions come up.
I Just ordered The yukon ring an piston gear set from RANDY'S for a Dana spicer 44, in a 4.11 gear. Thanks for the advice on the diff gears. Know i need to find out what my local mechanic will charge for the install.
Thought it was a fair price at $200 for the gear set.
I plan to order the 2in body lift kit soon to.
Btw, my buddy just put traction bars on his lifted 88' f-150 straight 6. Would it be necessary to install them on my bronco with the high HP/Torque crate thats in it when i body lift 2in?
If so Where can i find them. Looking to ordering my off road parts before hunting season in 1 month. need to be ready.
