Hey to all~ I am having a problem with my A/C, it started smelling like horse poop. Then began to blow warm. I took it in and the recharged it. It lasted cold for a few months and got me through the summer. This summer I went and had it charged and within 2 weeks it was blowing warm again. On the last time it was charged they put dye in it but before I took it back the place closed down! I am sweating to death, does anyone have any ideas on a inexpensive fix?? Thanks a bunch!!! Summer
I can see why they went out of business. You took it in, they added dye, and recharged with out repairing a leak they should have found even without using dye. That's why refrigerant sniffer equipment is used. There are no quick fixes I know of. Take it to a reputable shop and have the leak fixed properly or you'll be doing the recharge over and over again. As for the smell, it's mold that grows on the evaporator. There are chemical foaming sprays A/C repair shops use to clean the evaporator with. Some vehicles also have cabin air filters to help mask the smell.
Refrigerant has oil in it,look closely at the hoses and hose connections under the hood.If you see any oil residue(with dirt) that would be a good place to start.Compersser seals can leak as well.If your engine is really dirty(to the point that you cant tell) get some engine cleaner, and clean out the engine compartment. This will obviously remove any refrigerant oil from the hoses, but if the leak is large enough, the tell-tale oil will re-appear fairly quickly. This may however require one last "recharge" to make it happen.
