Need help.

Alright guys here's the story of this little mess.

So I went down today to work on my truck again...got it pulled out and tryed to start it and all it did was make a clicking noise like the batteries where dead so I checked the battery cables and tried to start it again but this time sparks shot out from under the cab, so I turned the truck off and took the key out, got out of the truck and the truck started trying to start it's self on it's own and smoke started rolling out of the passenger side of the engine bay, so I had to pull the batteries to shut it down, the smoke looked like it was coming from a relay but I was just trying to shut it down and didn't really get a good look, I have no clue at all what could have done this and I'm just hoping it didn't just fry my starter and relay.

84_f250_6.9 is gonna come down and take a look at my truck to see if he can help but I just want to know what could have done this and if I should be checking for anything else.......this was the last thing I wanted to be happening right now.

1 of two things happened... either the ignition switch in the column broke and stuck in the turn over position or the solenoid on the firewall froze in the open position, easy way to tell would have been to pull the small ignition switch wire from the side of the solenoid. If it's still trying to turn over then it's the solenoid and not the switch. Either way it sounds like that solenoid might have burned itself if you had smoke rolling off it.

Three places to look.

The ignition switch cam broke, pull the blue/red (small wire on a plug in terminal) wire off the starter relay on the fender and it should not try to start.

The starter relay on the fender welded the contacts together, pull the black wire off the larger terminal on the fender mounted relay and it should not try to start.

The starter mounted solenoid welded the contacts together, either a new solenoid or complete starter will be needed if that is what stuck.

Got it figured out!

84_f250_6.9 came down and took a look at my truck and found out it was the starter relay......so all I need to do is go buy a new one and I'm ready to keep going on the ole girl.
