i am thinking of building a 410, but i need to know what is all involved in it. i know you use a 390 block. and a 428 crank. but what about connecting rods? and pistons. are they from the 390? or do i use 428 con. rods with 390 pistons? are a 390&428 balanced the same? (detroit VS. nuetral) does it matter which balancer and flexplate i use when i have it all balanced? what kind of torque numbers can i expect to get (approx.) what about H.P. from the 410 VS. the 390. or would i be better off building a 390? a friend of mine has a 390 that is missing the rod caps. for sale cheap. $150 but if i need those rods from the 390 i dont know if it is cheap enough to justify it. i have heard a lot that Hot Rod did a 390 build up. is that available onine? what numbers dd they get? hp,tq
well thanks in advance for replys

Hi, First of all I would need to know your budget and you compression that you want to run. A cheap way to build high compression low budget is using the Silvolite 1139 pistons( these are low compression (about 8.5-1) 390 pistons. and yes all 390,410,428,427,rods will work (as long as they have rod caps). The 1139 will give yu about 10-1 comp. If this is to much comp then you will have to have piston cut down and if you are going to that expense then you might as well buy Forged 390 pistons and have tem turned down (about .100 +). The only problem with building this is that you should have a compitant builder that is patient that can help you with it. As far as the flexplate is concerned you deffinetly will want to ballance the motor, and I think that your ballancer will know for certain. It should deffinetly make more torque though.
i am thinking about 10-10.5:1 compression. something that will survive on pump gas. i will also be getting the edelbrock heads. so that much comp. shouldnt be a prob. with 93 octane. also i am going to take a while to build ths since it will be expensive. also i live in milwaukee. i know of a couple engine builders but they both specialize in small chevies. thay are good. but they dont know all that much about FE's
can anyone recommend a shop in milwaukee Wi or Chicago i can go to.
thanks
matt
Hello from Madison, WI- my engine was lovingly built (2x-nothing wrong just faster & funnier) by a shop in Sun Prairie -send me a Personal Message and I'll give you particulars. He also does Chev (hey WalMart does too) but is very knowledgeable on Blue Oval and loves 390's, has done some heavyweights.
