He's friends with his uncle and a son to his Dad. A dumb question asked of his uncle gets a particular type of response. That same question to his Dad may not get a pleasant response, even if it's only his perception.
Keep us updated on how it holds up. How many miles do you put on the wagoneer usually? I hope you have good luck with it.
I've put quite a few miles on it since I got it. I've been driving it daily to work, tryin to keep miles off the Ex. Plus the Wag gets about the same milage. It's about 40 miles a day I usually run, so if there's a issue with the gears, I'll find out pritty quick I'd think. I'm going to sand blast the rust off before I install them. Other than that, they are goin in with the bearings that are in there. (90,000 miles on them) so if they go out, it won't be a big loss as long as the locker isn't hurt any.
cleaned and oiled the rear hatch mechanism. I got the actuator to work so it locks/unlocks but the key isn't working at all. I took the tumbler out and oiled/blew it out and worked it over for about 30min and still nothing. I'm starting to wonder if it's even the right one for my key. So the next question is if i wanted to replace it how do i go about getting a tumbler for the hatch that matches my keys?.....well at least for now i can finally lock my rear hatch when i drive to the city.
Did you see my write-up on it? Soak it in PB blaster overnight to start with. I thought my key was wrong too for a while.

Trust me, they will be fine. Maybe you can just use a wire brush and paint thinner on them. With the oil they have nowadays those gears barely even touch.

Christina, your situation is something I kind of look forward to. I want my kids to know dad is available when they need some help. My 21 year old nephew comes to me for help with his '05 6.0 instead of his dad, which is weird since his dad is a pretty good shadetree.
Ben I agree it's nice to have them knowing they can always come to you for that "problem" just wish they would mention when the sound starts instead of waiting until the sound turns into a "scream". I know eventually they will learn the concept of "fix it when it starts making noise", not before and not after. Before you are wasting and after you are going to cost yourself more. It was the front seal on the pump, so in this case nothing else got trashed, another 20 miles though and that pump would have been dry and who knows what happens then...

It's all part of learning and you learn even faster when you have to fix things yourself. It was nice of you to do that though.
