well i just got my engine in and trouble .. just woundering i put shorty headers on and gt40 heads . everything is new .. im having trouble with the shifting to the transmission of the truck i did replace the gears from stock 308s to 411s. And i also put in a crane 444232 cam. just woundering where the timing should be and were should mt tach be? would i have to take it to a transmission place to set the shifting points in it ?
You're going to have to better decribe what is going on here, exactly what is wrong with the way the transmission shifts, and exactly what trasnmission does the truck have?
it shifts at a high rpm (3500) and it dont shift into od ? its aod transmission. sombody said something about a tv cable could be adjusted ? i only have like 6000 on new transmission.
I would say for the trans, try adjusting the TV cable. My Haynes manual is very cryptic so without being able to see the truck, I can't give you the exact procedure. Do this before you do anything else.
As far as your no power/no punch/high idle, sounds like the truck's ignition/timing is not dialed in. You should be able to start with the factory baseline timing and go from there. NOte that this is just a starting point.
That fast idle might be a vac leak or just all mis-adjusted idle speed. That cam profile seems pretty tame to me.
Since this is now a 'custom' engine and not factory, a hard and fast 'time it @ x before TDC' doesn't apply. You will have to 'power time' the thing by going out where you can punch it and listen for pinging (detonation). Advance the timing ever so slightly until the engine pings under hard acceleration, then back off about 2 degrees or until it doesn't. This is an old IHC SV V8 trick.
Alternatively you can take it to a dyno and buy some dyno time to tune the engine.
It would help to know all of the engine specs, if it's carbed/efi, etc. and a little about the truck itself.
