Used motor install: question?

This is about the E 99 truck that I have been messing with for a while.

The owner of the truck and I went to Memphis and bought a 2000 model 7.3L motor with 116,000 miles on it, and I will be installing it in his truck.

The motor was pulled about a month ago, and I was wondering if there is anything I should do in particular before I try to start the motor? ( turn over by hand etc.?)

Thanks in advance!

P.S. I am not trying to ask unnecassary questions, but I want to make sure I don't mess up his "new to him" motor. Thanks,

Turning over by hand is a good idea but you will have to use a breaker bar.
Just be sure there is no fluid in the chamber because the starter can bend a rod if it hydrolocks.

Also I would pull the Valve Covers and do a real good inspection. Look at the wiring harness especially.

Thanks Neal,

I will pull the VC and take a look. I might even pull the GP and hand crank the motor a few times.

Any other suggestions?

Check the oil pan for rust and change out the up pipe gaskets.

The oil pan is clean as can be, I swear this motor looks like a new one. It came out of a southern truck. I checked for soot on the up-pipes, there is none, do you reccomend changing them anyway?

I would change the uppipe gaskets at a minumum.
Seriously it is less tha $25.00 and a major head ache to do when in the truck.

Actually now that I think about it I would also change the turbo pedestal o-rings too. They are very cheap.

Good advice! Thanks!

I will talk to the owner and see what he wants to do.

I would change the pan gasket cause if you have my luck it will leak as soon as he leaves with it plus you have the motor out already

Thanks for all the input. I talked to the owner and he didn't want to do anything that wasn't absolutely necessary, so I just shoved it in there.

Worked on it till midnight last night and finished it this morning, and it runs like a scalded dog!!!!!!

I want to say thank you for answering all my questions.

Your welcome. Remember

Glad it went well for you. Sometimes you can only take then to water, they are on their own after that. Atleast he may bring it to you if anything does go wrong or start leaking then your bill is much more. LOL

The install went better than expected, which is unusuall for me

He will bring it to me if anything goes wrong, and he just bought a 2003 CC 4x4 F-250 that was in a flood and I am going to be going through it for him, I'm sure it will be fun

Thanks again, this is the best place I know of to get advice about these trucks
