maybe i havent looked at this in the right way i am leaning towards putting a mustang tank in my 54 since my original is shot i have two questions for you if you dont mind . the first is venting the tank does it vent through the cap? or through a different place? i am running a 750 holley on a fe (390 40. over) the second is did you consider building a square tube frame for the tank to sit on to hang under the frame? i am running leaf springs and i am leery of taking the last cross member out to slide the tank in thanks for any insight that you can give me

I put a early '80's suburban tank in my 50. It goes inbetween the frame rails and installs from the bottom. i also grabbed the cross members out of the suburban, and trimed them to fit, and used all the straps from the donor as well, (i think i have pics in my gallery) . The tank vents thru the cap, and the filler i routed thru the rear fender.

Hi Chief,

the mustang tank will vent thru the cap...

go back to my page and look at the mustang tank article there... it has more detail than the one in the tech section...

http://jniolon.clubfte.com look in the left frame top article...

look at the last two pics in the article... I did fabricate a frame of 1" square tubing that was the same size as the lip on the tank... you can see it in the pictures... Then I bolted the tank and frame to the framerails with the same bolt... but I also added additional bolts front and rear to hold the tank to the tubing frame...

After some other discussion on the board here.. I think I'm going to use the larger tank (20 gal) and mount the tank and frame from underneath the frame rails... one reason is the 20 gal tank is taller and I need the room to clear the bed wood and the other is... if I ever have to drop the tank it would be nearly impossible with the tank and frame above the lower lip of the frame rail ... see what I mean ??? just something to consider... there is more info on the larger tanks in the article on my page

hope this helps

john

thanks John

i think that i will probably gonna go with the 20 gal also but that is still down the road this summer i hope i will probably hang mine under the frame it looks like ill have plenty of ground clearance that way. the reason i got confused is that you also had a pic of a boat filler cap and since i own a 19 ft hole in the water i know that almost all the deck fitting filler necks that you buy are not vented boat tanks have a diffent vent hose to keep the water out and it also lets you know your tank is full when the gas runs out of it lol

thanks again for the info
