01 psd dies after starting wont start again

First off let me start by saying thanks for having a good forum and pre thanks for any advice. This is my first post

With that said. I have a 2001 7.3 diesel bought from my brother with 158,00 miles. The truck for the past couple of months after sitting over night will sart fine and die as if there is no fuel and will not restart without starting fluid and some pedal. Then runs fine. It does seam while idling or at cruising speed have a hiccup. checked all things I have read filters, oil level ect. I know I shouldnt use starting fluid but its the only way to crank the ole girl. I am wondering if any body else has had this problem and what it takes to fix it.. by the way it does not die after getting the fluid and cranks fine for the rest of the day. thanks again for any help

First thing I would say is a cam position sensor. Always kept an extra one in my glove box with a 10mm wrench when I had my 7.3 PowerStroke. Can't guarantee it, but I would change that first.

Welcome to FTE. Stop by the 7.3 diesel section located further down the main forum listing. You'll get more info on your motor there.

The reason we don't like starting fluid in our diesels is the glow plugs can ignite the fluid too soon and cause you to suddenly need a new motor when your old one suddenly goes boom.

Have you considered buying a scanner that can monitor live data and run some tests to help you figure this out? Many of us have AE for just that.

Have you checked the oil level in the HPOP when you're having the starting issues?

You should only have one fuel pump,on the frame rail.No injector pump on these trucks
